Open for Business:Glenair's Class 10,000 Filter Array Clean RoomWhen Glenair launched its filter connector offering in 2005, we alreadyhad plenty of in-house capacity for the manufacture of standardenvironmental and hermetic connectors. But we were completelydependent on outside suppliers for an essential component part in EMI/EMPfilters: the actual multi-layer planar array filter element.So, starting in 2008, we began to manufacture our own filter arrays. The filterarray manufacturing process is not a simple one: First, chemists and techniciansin our class 10,000 clean room mix a ceramic slurry and cast it onto Mylar tape. Acomputer-controlled machine then cuts and stacks thin ceramic layers and screenprints each layer with metallic film for perfect capacitance. The “layer-cakes” arethen cured for sizing, machined for contact alignment and positioning, fired forhardness, and plated for conductivity. Finally, specially trained assemblers usemicro-soldering techniques to affix contacts within the arrays, often consisting ofmultiple ceramic capacitor discs.Our new planar array facility allows us to provide extremely fast deliveries ofEMI/EMP filter connectors with outstandingly high levels of quality.
