<strong>The</strong> Libyan – North AmericanScholarship Program<strong>The</strong> Libyan-North American Scholarship Program is a collaboration betweenthe Libyan Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research and the <strong>Canadian</strong><strong>Bureau</strong> for International Education, funded by the Libyan Government. It involvesapproximately 2,500 Libyan students who study in <strong>Canada</strong> and the US. <strong>The</strong> goalof the Program is to build the capacity of Libyan citizens to address the needsof Libyan public institutions, academia and Libyan society as a whole throughthe pursuit of graduate and post-graduate medical studies in North America.Visit www.cbie-bcei.ca/libya for more details.<strong>Canadian</strong> <strong>Bureau</strong> forInternational Education (CBIE)CBIE is an umbrella, non-governmental educational organizationcomprised of over 200 colleges, universities, schools, school boards,educational organizations and businesses across <strong>Canada</strong>. Nationally,CBIE engages in scholarship management, policy development, research, advocacyand public information. CBIE is both a leader in shaping <strong>Canada</strong>'s internationaleducation agenda and a highly recognized provider of professional developmentprograms for <strong>Canada</strong>'s international educators. Internationally, CBIE engages incooperative projects in capacity building, institutional strengthening and humanresource development. Our focus is on education at all levels, specialized trainingprograms, civil society and public administration.Program HistoryCBIE and <strong>Canada</strong> have long played a role in ensuring the education of Libyanstudents. Over the past 30 years, CBIE has been either directly or indirectly involvedwith the Libyan Ministry of Education and Scientific Research. For 20 years, from1981 to 2001, CBIE successfully managed the Libyan Scholarship and MedicalResidency Program in <strong>Canada</strong>, which was then turned over to the newly establishedEmbassy of Libya in Ottawa. Due to the growing scope of the program and basedon the government’s positive prior experience with CBIE, as well as CBIE’s depthand breadth of knowledge and experience in the North American education system,the Ministry of Education and Scientific Research chose CBIE to manage theProgram once again.
