Crane Simulators
The replica operator station simulates a real crane
cabin with controls accessible on either side of the
operator's chair, out of cabin view and a
microphone for communication.
The multi‐channel instructor station consists of
control and monitoring features
which include multi‐channel visual repeaters,
instructor interface for editing and runtime view,
stealth view for de‐briefing, and
CCTV camera view of the operator cabin.
The multi‐channel visual system for the operator
cabin view provides the trainee with a realistic out
of cabin view. The visual system is completely
integrated with the simulation exercise, motion,
sound system and crane controls and thus provides
the necessary depth in the visual perspective.
Operations
Trainees can be exposed to a wide range of scenar‐
ios, including:
• Start‐up and shut down procedures
• Boom operations
• Rotation movement (turning gear operation)
• Swing control of spreader
• On deck and under deck cargo operations
• Twist lock operations
• Flipper operations
The pedestal crane can be used for a number of
load types including container, bulk and break bulk
cargoes.
The crane simulator provides a realistic training
environment and is suitable for skills assessment.
Crane Models
For the training of seafarers, the pedestal crane
and ship‐based gantry crane are most important.
The crane simulators can also accommodate quay
cranes; in particular rubber tire gantry, rail‐
mounted gantry, straddle carriers, mobile tele‐
scopic boom cranes, floating barge cranes or off‐
shore cranes.
Crane Simulations
Comprehensive skills training can be provided to
trainees as instructors utilize the crane simula‐
tor’s capability in viewing the trainee's reactions
to various situations, and in assessing the trainee
on a range of productivity and safety metrics.
Simulated conditions include weather conditions,
i.e. rain, snow, fog and storms, time of day with
varying sun and shadow conditions, and night
operation.
The assessment of trainees can be done through
productivity metrics, i.e. number of moves,
number of containers handled, average number
of containers handled per hour, and safety met‐
rics, i.e. total number of collisions, number of
major mistakes, number of minor mistakes.
Since all operator and instructor events are
logged, these events can be replayed during
debriefing.
