8 Full Mission Bridge Simulator (FMBS) Key Features The Integrated Bridge Environment consists of the following standard equipment designed to produce a realistic bridge environment: • 9 channel 70” LCD‐based visual system that provides 270 degrees field of view • Visual channel with ability to pan and view 360 degree around the vessel and select any location for close up view in binocular mode • 2 Radars/ARPA’s • 1 ECDIS and chart table • Conning station • Separate steering station • Full GMDSS Simulation and VHF • Overhead display of navigation, weather, propulsion data, etc. • Engine and thruster controls • Sound signal controls • Navigation aids that include GPS, Echo Sounder (with recorder), Doppler Log, AIS, Course Recorder etc. • Mooring panel with capability to pay out, heave and make fast mooring ropes • Anchoring panel with facility to walk back, drop and heave up port or starboard anchors • Tug control panel with facility to deploy tugs in push or pull modes around the vessel • Alarms panel • Close Circuit Television (CCTV) for recording and debriefing. • Instructor station enabling complete monitor‐ ing and control on exercise environment Target Vessels To create a realistic exercise environment, all 'own ships types' and the following additional vessel types can be used in the creation of exercises: tug boat , sand barge, fast ferry, navy ship, helicopter, life boat, life raft, sailboat, OSV boat, and pilot boat. Own Ship Selection Accurate hydrodynamic motion models and visual models can be used in the FMBS and mini‐bridges alike for: • Bulk Carrier ‐ Handymax, Panamax, Aframax • Tanker ‐ LNG, VLGC, VLCC, Chemical tanker • Container Vessel ‐ Small (1100 TEU), Medium (5500 TEU), Large (9000 TEU) • RO/RO The model of a smaller feeder vessel/coaster is under development. High fidelity of models en‐ sures accurate simulation in respect to characteris‐ tics and behavior based on surrounding elements (i.e. sea state, under keel clearance, side clear‐ ance).
FMBS Overview • Near “real” visualization of marine environment. • The own ship behavior and target vessels are rigorously modeled to correctly exhibit 6 degrees‐ of‐freedom under combined effect of internal, external and interactive forces. • All navigation equipment designed and equipped in accordance with performance standards for navigational equipment. • Vast range of navigational scenarios including open sea, coastal navigation, high traffic density areas, arrival and departure ports, berthing and un‐berthing, anchoring and others. • Varying conditions of visibility, time and day, wind, current, tides and weather can be simu‐ lated. • Software is entirely modular, scalable, and can be further customized to meet specific requirements. • All hardware used including computers, monitors and projectors are ‘off‐the‐shelf’ and eliminate any dependency on specific make or model. • Engine alarms panel and controls allow simulation of unmanned engine room. Exercise Areas Exercise areas allow for anything from simple navigation to complicated traffic and pilotage situations, including realistic docking down to accurate effects of mooring lines, anchors and tugs. In addition, a generic open‐sea area can be used for exercises requiring ample sea room or for SAR tasks. These areas include Europort, Dover Straits, South‐ ampton, Milford Haven, approaches to Felixstowe, Felixstowe Port, Gibraltar Straits, Bosporus Canal, Malacca Straits, Dardanelles, Singapore Straits and Singapore Port, approaches to Bangkok River, and Tokyo Bay and approaches. Additional training areas can be developed if needed. Now, under develop‐ ment are the North Sea from Germany to English Channel, Port of Hamburg and Port of Bremen. Mini Bridges Unlike the FMBS, the mini bridges have a horizontal field of view of only 90 degrees and the access to some instruments is limited by the available screens. These simulators can be used for training from cadet to Master, subject to the appropriate exercises. The fidelity of the model behavior is just as accurate as in the full mission bridge simulator. The mini bridges have fully functioning RADAR/ ARPA, ECDIS, AIS and complete GMDSS. For plot‐ ting and traditional chart work, there is also a con‐ venient chart table. CCTV and audio recording are in addition to the playback of the exercises and corresponding data. All can be used for extensive and detailed de‐ briefing of participants. 9
