UM Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer CenterAntonia Hyland & Kaliope Xenakis, Co-chairsIn attending the various meetings at UM/Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center we have becomeaware of the various ways fundraising is offered and wish to bring these to you in the hopes your chaptercould avail themselves of these suggestions.Contacting a local restaurant to have them donate a portion of their food sales on a specific date whendiners mention Sylvester. A local department store to be contacted with information about Sylvester andarrange sale of discount tickets for use in the store, here too, Sylvester must be mentioned. Booklets willbe available upon request.Have a local Vendor Day with vendors donating a portion of their funds. Vendors could be set up at achurch center and table space could be charged or you may ask for a percentage of sales.Certainly, Alex's Place which is their fairly new facility for pediatric cancer patients and children up to age18, for which we supply books and other items for their comfort while at the facility. This certainly couldbe included as a fund raiser for your local luncheon/ fashion show. A local walkathon has been very profitablein getting your local membership involved. UM/Sylvester has been successful in opening satellitecenters throughout South Florida. The latest one in Kendall thus making UM/Sylvester available to morepatients. The Deerfield Beach facility is setup to give total care for mammography exams for early detectionto complete treatment.Dr. W. Jarrard Goodwin, who is part of the Strategic Advisory Board at Sylvester is a noted professor ofotolaryngology and plastic surgery addressed us recently and brought us up to date on the latest and continuingresearch developments in their brain tumor research of which you were previously informed; theirstem cell research which is now combined with the bone marrow program. Dr. Goodwin was very specificthat at Sylvester, they do not use embryo stem cells.As new developments come to light, we will report them.47
