GRAND PRESIDENT’S MESSAGEJOANNE SALTAS…unraveled by night what she wove by day.Daughters of Penelope are familiar with this ritual. It wasdone by our namesake, Penelope, in order to avoid the advancesof the many suitors who wanted to claim her. Herhusband, Odysseus, was gone—she was left to keep theirhome intact and their son safe. She would PREVAIL.Daughters of Penelope are familiar with the beginning of theorganization. Our founder, Alexandra Apostolidis saw theneed, and what would become the benefit, of a Hellenic women’sorganization. One that would empower women. Shewould PREVAIL.As the theme for this year—PREVAIL—represents the abilityof the sisters of the Daughters of Penelope to reach greaterheights, to be more effective, to become more widespread.Throughout this 1st Edition of the 2014 Penelope Scroll, theachievements of this preeminent organization are presented. It is clear evidence of the love the members have for the missionof the Daughters of Penelope. The Daughters of Penelope do not ask: Can we do this? Butproudly announce: We can do this! The natural progression becomes: We will do this; We did dothis; We will continue to this!Daughters of Penelope-- bold, bright, beautiful, destined to dobig things. In other words. PREVAIL.GRAND PRESIDENT’STRAVEL ITINERARY1/18-19/2014: Chapter Visitation to NestorChapter in New Orleans, LA1/24-26/2014: Grand Lodge Meeting &District 13 Mid-Year Conference in Chicago,IL2/15/2014: Valentine’s Day Ball & ChapterVisitation in Montreal, Canada3/25/2014: Tentatively Capitol Hill Day3/29/2014: DOP Saint Basil’s Day at SaintBasil’s Academy in Garrison, NY3/30-4/11/2014: Grand President’s Visit toGreece, Cyprus & Turkey2013-2014 Daughters of Penelope Grand Lodge5/3/2013: Grand President’s Testimonial& Grand Lodge Meeting in Salt Lake City,Utah7/20-26/2014: AHEPA Family SupremeConvention in New Orleans, LA1

Growth & Expansion 2013-2014 “You Make a Difference” The Year of the Member!By Anna-Helene Grossomanides, Grand Vice PresidentI am excited to say that we have started this year off just great. Also, I am glad to report that many Districtsand Chapters have increased membership and paid their dues earlier then in the past. So, rememberto look out for my G & E Monthly Newsletters for more news and information on membership challenges. Finally, I am very grateful to the Chapters & Districts I have already visited and for the opportunity to presentmy New Growth & Expansion Program 2013-2014. I feel truly honored and blessed to be part of this wonderful sisterhood.I leave with this thought: “The world is not interested in what we do for a living. What they are interested inis what we have to offer freely - hope strength, love and the power to make a difference!” Sasha Azevedo(Entertainer)Always remember ……………………….. “You Make a Difference”Highlights of my visits…………I want to thank all the Daughters and Ahepans for their hospitality!October 19, 2013 – AHEPA Family Fall Conference, Norwich, ConnecticutSo Happy to Join my Sister on the GL Sister Kathryn Tripodis, GGZIINovember 2, 2013 – District Six AHEPA Family Fall Conference St. BasilAcademy Garrison, New York3

A Few Words from our Grand Lodge OfficersAnna-Helene GrossomanidesGrand Vice PresidentAs I look back on why I joined the Daughters of Penelope one thing is clear, it was one of the most significantdecisions I ever made. Already being part of this remarkable organization as a Maid of Athena for afew years, I knew that joining the senior order would be even more rewarding. Especially since as aDaughter I could help to grow the Maids of Athena and build the future of our organization. Most importantly, I am so grateful to have been blessed with so many wonderful friendships, memorableexperiences and extraordinary opportunities as a member of both orders. For that reason I am so honoredto be part of a sisterhood that has enriched my life in so many ways and still does. Thank you sisters.Aspa KostopoulosCanadian PresidentWhat is my personal sentiment about being a member of the Daughters of Penelope? It has been an experiencethat I will treasure forever. Giving me so many memories that I will forever have in my heart andsoul. Meeting and making friendships that I pray will last a lifetime. Contributing to my community at large,in different ways and when you hear the words, “Thank you”, you know you are part of an organization thatwill be remembered and most of all respected. Thank you to all the members of the Daughters of Penelope.Connie PilallisGrand SecretaryPREVAIL.... ACHIEVE....You are the Heartbeat of the Daughters of Penelope....Take the Lead with Passion.... I am proud to say I have served on the Lodge of these Grand Presidentswhose theme's have helped grow, motive, encourage and inspire us all as members of this Sisterhood, called the Daughters of Penelope.Family, Friendship, Experience, Values, Selfless Acts, Confidence, Support, Growth, Education, Hellenismand Kindness are only a few of the ideals that make me proud to be a member and serve. The year, 1929, the place, San Francisco, the dream of 25 Charter Members,"The Daughters of Penelope". Each of us as members has a responsibility for the Dream, the Growth, theFuture of the Daughters. Together we can continue the dream! Why I am A Daughter of PenelopeBy Jan Spanos – Grand TreasurerThere many things that are difficult to expound upon, however, the reasons I am a Daughter of Penelopeare multitudinous. I am a member because it helps me to help others in my community and the communityat large. It allows me to identify with women that share the same values and love for the message that ourfounder handed down. It gives me the opportunity to fulfill my Hellenic roots and ideals. It gives me thesense of family. But probably most of all, I am a Daughter of Penelope because there are no bounds to ourindividual growth and spirit of togetherness that we share as a sisterhood. We’re always there for one andother and help to provide the a lasting bond.5

Julia Macris Collins, Grand Governor Zone IDear Sister’s: My involvement with the AHEPA Organization started in 1995. During this time myfather was the President of the hosting Chapter for the District Six convention. His Chapter did not have aDaughters Chapter and he asked me to start one.Since then I have become involved with different aspects of the organization up to and including mycurrent position of Zone I Grand Governor. I have made long and lasting friendships with numerous Sistersthat I would not have had the opportunity to meet. This organization has brought me closer to my Hellenicroots. Our organization allows us to share experiences and assist other s that may not be so fortunate. Ihave the opportunity now to become more philanthropic than I would have ever been before. The Daughters have been a force to push me to become a better person in the community. It has helpedme look at life in a different way. Now I know that I can make a difference. With the help from other Sistersand the AHEPA Organization we can make life a better place to live in peace.Kathryn Tripodis, Grand Governor Zone IIThis is my second year as Grand Governor of Zone II. I joined the Daughters of Penelope to belong to anorganization that values our Hellenism and preserves its ideals, ideals that we pass on. It also gave methe opportunity to get involved with a wonderful group of dedicated, talented and creative women and continuesto do so.Eva Jean Fomalont, Grand Governor IIIWhen Grand President Joanne Saltas asked the Grand Lodge officers to share our personal sentimentsabout being a Daughter of Penelope. The first thought that crossed my mind was my initiation into the AulisChapter 195 in Asbury Park, New Jersey District #5 in 1967. The second thought that popped into myhead was the realization that I have been a proud and active member of the Daughters for 46 years. Asan international organization it makes it simple for us to hold hands across the miles and share our ideasand ideals. When I moved from New Jersey to New Mexico it helped to make the transition easier when Iwas able to join Helen of Troy Chapter 19 in Albuquerque, NM District 17. I am proud of my Hellenic rootsand equally as proud of the Hellenic women’s organization the Daughters of Penelope which has been instrumentalin teaching me many valuable lessons throughout the years. I honor and value the wonderfulfriendships that I have made with the many sisters of the Daughters of Penelope.Diane Petersen, Grand Governor Zone IVWhen I joined the Daughters of Penelope, I never dreamed it would take me on such an exciting journey.A new world opened up to me by becoming a part of the Daughters of Penelope family; I acquired manylifelong Greek and Hellenic friends. We are a sisterhood that supports each other through times of sadnessand celebrates together in times of joy. A sisterhood that does many things together, from luncheonsand movies to conventions and cruises. When Alexandra Apostolides founded the Daughters of Penelope, perhaps she did so hoping it would become the beacon it has for Greek and Hellenic women to cometogether as sisters. THANK YOU ALEXANDRA !Anna-Marie Cariotis, Grand MOA AdvisorPreserving tradition, connecting to my Greek heritage, and philanthropy….these are three things I am passionateabout. The Daughters of Penelope offers me the avenue to achieve these objectives with a groupof like-minded women. This instant Sisterhood and sense of belonging are just a couple reasons why I ama Daughter of Penelope.6

News from our Districts!(In District Order)District 21On the exact date of the founding of the Daughters of Penelope, our Sisterhood gathered with the sistersof Eos#1 to celebrate its birthday. It was truly a day to celebrate the Daughters of Penelope organization, its lodges, its chapters, its goals, its women. It was a day to celebrate Alexandra Apostolides, a womanwho in the 1920’s had a vision and a goal to establish a women’s organization that would rise above allothers. She achieved that goal on November 16, 1929 and it is because of you that our organization isstill thriving, achieving and prevailing. On Saturday, we celebrated you, the women in the room and oursupporters, spouses and children, and those that were not able to be with us that day. Sisters, you havetruly risen to the occasion that our founder Alexandra wanted you to. Continue to assist the communitynear and afar, promote education, cultivate the ideals and traditions of Hellenism and the spirit of Penelope– our sisterhood.
