Emily Couric Memorial LecturerThe Emily Couric Memorial Lecture was developed by the ACG, the Virginia GastroenterogicalSociety (VGS) and the Old Dominion Society of Gastroenterology Nurses and Associates(ODSGNA) to honor Virginia State Senator Emily Couric, who lost her battle with pancreaticcancer in October of 2001. Senator Couric was a strong advocate for healthcare issues,particularly in her instrumental work to pass the nation’s first legislation mandating healthinsurance coverage for colorectal cancer screening. The Emily Couric Lecturer is someoneprominent in the field of GI cancer related topics. This individual is nominated by thePresident following consultation with the VGS and the appointment is subject to approvalby the Board of Trustees.<strong>2013</strong> LecturerNicholas J. Shaheen, MD, MPH, FACGCan We Prevent Cancer in Barrett’s Esophagus?Nicholas Shaheen is Professor of Medicine and Epidemiology atthe University of North Carolina School of Medicine and School ofPublic Health, and Director for the Center for Esophageal Diseasesand Swallowing at the University of North Carolina.Dr. Shaheen did his undergraduate degree at Harvard Universityand earned his medical degree at the University of Chicago, PritzkerSchool of Medicine, where he also completed his internship andresidency. He completed his clinical fellowship training at theUniversity of North Carolina (UNC), where he also earned hisMaster’s degree at the School of Public Health. Concurrently, hecompleted a National Institutes of Health-sponsored fellowship inEpidemiology. He joined the faculty at UNC in 1998.His research interest is in the epidemiology and management of esophageal diseases. Heis the author of over 200 journal articles related to reflux disease, Barrett’s esophagus,and esophageal cancer. He is currently a Senior Associate Editor of the American Journalof Gastroenterology and on the editorial board of Clinical and Translational Science. Dr.Shaheen receives research funding from the National Institutes of Health and multipleprivate foundations and corporations to pursue clinical and translational research inesophageal diseases.Dr. Shaheen is a past President of the North Carolina Society of Gastroenterology, pastChairman of the Clinical Practice section of the American Gastroenterological Association(AGA), and currently on the American College of Gastroenterology (ACG) Board of Trustees.He is a Fellow of the ACG, the American College of Physicians, and the AGA.6
