Rubin, MD, FACGThe Emerging Role of the Microbiome in the Pathogenesis andManagement of Inflammatory Bowel DiseaseDr. Rubin is Professor of Medicine, Co-Director of the InflammatoryBowel Disease Center, and Associate Section Chief for Educationat the University of Chicago Medicine. He previously served for11 years as Director of the Gastroenterology, Hepatology, andNutrition fellowship program. He also is an associate facultymember at the MacLean Center for Clinical Medical Ethics and anassociate investigator at the UC Comprehensive Cancer Center.He graduated with honors from the UC Pritzker School of Medicine,and completed his internship, residency and fellowships in bothgastroenterology and clinical medical ethics at the University ofChicago. He is a fellow of the American College of Gastroenterology(ACG), American Gastroenterological Association and American College of Physicians andan active national member of the Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation of America. Chosen by hispeers as a member of Best Doctors (recognized for superior clinical ability) and America’sTop Physicians (Gastroenterology), he received the ACG Governors Award for Excellencein Clinical Research (2003), the Cancer Research Foundation Young Investigator’s Award(2004), and the UC Postgraduate Teaching Award in recognition of significant contributionsfor fellowship education (2006). In 2012, he received the CCFA’s Rosenthal Award, a nationalleadership award bestowed upon a volunteer who has contributed in an indisputable wayto the quality of life of patients and families.Dr. Rubin is the editor of a best-selling book on IBD, and an author or co-author of many peerreviewedarticles on IBD, virtual colonoscopy, genetic testing in IBD, and cancer in IBD.He is also a featured media contact for issues related to IBD, appearing on satellite radio,television and print media. His principal research interests include novel IBD therapies andoutcomes, colon cancer prevention and clinical medical ethics.15
