Revamped Studbooknow on saleTHE studbook has established a reputation over manydecades as the bible of greyhound breeding data. But as theinformation age embraces the greyhound industry and websitesproduce on-line up to date data, the tried and true reading ofbreeding enthusiasts through hard cover studbooks puts itslongevity in question. The knowledge an individual obtains by fullyunderstanding breeding pedigrees cannot be overlooked whenreferring to the greyhound studbook. With the skyrocketingprices of pups and stud services, the small outlay for thepurchase of a book should not be overestimated. Cleverbreeders use the information of pedigrees when determininga potential sire rather than being influenced by commercialmarketing. The 2005 edition has been revamped, as the GreyhoundsAustralasia Directorate recognized the product must becomecommercially viable. The book has changed slightly inappearance, the traditional hard bound, cloth cover, has beenreplaced with a gloss laminated cover. This change withseveral other minor amendments has made the product moreaffordable. The new volume is available from Greyhounds Australasiaat $35 (plus postage and handing). The studbook data can still be purchased in CD form for$27.50 for the 2005 edition or $40 for editions 2004 and 2005.Contact GA on 03 9548 3500 or emailadmin@galtd.org.au to order you copy.Kelvin Tang, Lara Chang, Alex Gauld and Josh Dearnessmeet up with superstar Surf Lorian.Uni studentswon overQUEENSLAND University students have beenflocking to Gatton in search of some nutritious tidbits. The second year veterinary science students have beengiven a group task to study nutrition in small animals.Several groups have picked the nutritionalrequirements of the greyhound and in a bid to find outexactly what those requirements are, have approachedTony and Jane Apap at The A Team stud at Gatton."One of the girls in a group searched the internet andfound our website, contacted us and the visits started,"said Apap. "We are happy to help and the students areeager to learn."One recent group visit included Alex Gauld, 21 fromSouth Australia, Lara Chang, 20 of Malaysia, JoshDearness, 20 of Mackay, and Kelvin Tang, 22 of Singapore. For most it was their first experience of greyhoundsand all agreed the day-to-day running of a greyhound farmwas an eye-opener.Alex Gauld's family at home in South Australia hadadopted a retired greyhound.By DAVID BRASCHHE might be a novice in greyhound racing, butsuccess has come fairly quickly for Darren Burn.Darren, a 36-year-old plasterer from Victoria Point, decided late in 2003 to give greyhounds a try.His grandfather "Pom" Ratcliffe had racedsuccessfully in the 60s and 70s in Sydney, so there was ahint of greyhound racing pedigree in Darren."My grandfather raced a bitch called City Doll whichwon races at Harold Park," said Darren. In November and December of 2003,Darren completed the basic trainers courserun by the GRA.And then jumped head first into theindustry."My brother-in-law David Stagg was inthe industry at the time and he knew HarrySarkis well," said Darren (right). "I got toknow Harry and he gave me a broodbitchcalled Cyanogenic."Cyanogenic, while by the speed sireCrowned Honcho was out of the top classstaying bitch Cyanogen, herself a litter sisterto champion Mancunian Girl and from the famedSheila's Teresa damline.Darren got the bitch to breed with and Harry got acouple of pups from the litter.Cyanogenic had been the top sprinter of her day inNew Zealand, winning 18 and being placed in 10 of her36 starts, all over short courses.Darren put the bitch to Yo Yo's Boy and got fivepups, two dogs and three bitches. He reared them on his own three-quarter acreproperty at Victoria Point until they were six monthsold before sending all but one of the bitches to MikeASHLEE Leaver will rememberMay 2006 for a while to come. She is 18 and only has just receivedher owner-trainer's licensee. Familyfriend Phil Carter gave her a dog calledKal El (Token Prince-Zippy Zoe), thefirst dog she has trained.Ashlee, who has been helping putthe polish on her father Rod's team foryears, is also a member of theThree-codefeat maybe uniqueTOP thoroughbred trainer BevanLaming is clearly not impressed that hiswife Jenny has switched codes ... twice. That's Jenny with Jessie Duke a recentwinner at Capalaba out of the PaulFelgate kennel.Jenny races the dog in partnership withfelgate, but on the same day that jessieDuke won, Jenny also owned MooneeValley gallops winner Miss La Tar.And the night before, Jenny had ownedLavros Vision a winner at the GoldCoast trot meeting.Jenny's not sure, but she thinks it couldalmost be a first. Winners in all threeracing codes within 24 hours.Records are made tobe broken ... twiceChapman's to finish their rearing.Initially Darren didn't seem destined for muchsuccess with the litter."The two dogs broke down and didn't make it tothe racetrack," he said. "Goldina Lass, the bitch I keptat home, didn't show much so we sent her toRockhampton to be trained by Gavin Whitehead, andthree mates Shaun, Darren and Michael Cameron camein with me on all three bitches."The other two bitches now race asChunamunya and Oops Sorry.Since heading to Rockhampton, GoldinaLass has improved out of sight now boastinga record of 16 starts for nine wins and fiveplacings (to time of writing). And in April she broke theRockhampton 407m track record running23.36.With the initial success of Goldina Lass,Darren and his mates decided to send bothChunamunya and Oops Sorry toWhitehead as well. Only three weeks afterGoldina Lass had set a new 407m mark inRockhampton, Oops Sorry broke it running 23.31.To say the boys are excited is an understatement.Cyanogenic has since whelped a litter of four bitchesto a mating to Tiger Strong and those pups are now 12months old.Darren kept one of the bitches at home and the otherthree have been sent to a mate in Wolloongong to bereared.Cyanogenic has since been sent to Gavin Whiteheadon loan to breed with. It's already a winning formula, arecord breaking formula.Big month for AshleeBundaberg Club.Shewas recently voted onto thecommittee of the Bundaberg Club. And in the recent Maiden 1000series, Kal El gave Ashlee her firstwinner. It was only the second race startershe had prepared since gaining herlicense. It's certainly has been as big month. The (June, 2006) Journal Page 19
