I'm now 66 (I've been indogs for 50 years).I used to get up at 4am and walk thedog before I went to work. He never wona race.Every Thursday and Monday I wentto the dogs at Sandown and Olympic Park.In those years I met and becameacquainted with breederssuch as Rod Deakin and themaster of breeding NoelBanks. One night at Sandownover a few drinks, after Ihad bred a litter in my backyard with limited success,Rod Deakin gave me someadvice."Son, there is only oneway to breed a good litter."He told me how and Iwent out and did just whathe said."First find a goodbroodbitch whose damlinesgo back to Benjamin John,by the leading sire at thetime Temlee. Race her by allmeans."So I went and bought aTemlee-Rogey Girl bitchand named her Tem Tear.(Editor's Note: RogeyGirl was in-bred to the halfsisters Dreams Dian andRipple Jet on the immediatedamline of both sides of her pedigree.)I raced Tem Tear with good success. Shewon at Sandown, Traralgon, Sale, Ballaratand Geelong, over sprint and distance. Shedid the wrong thing at Geelong so I retiredher for breeding.Step two, according to Rod Deakin, wasto put her to a good outcross which I didwith Brown Lad an Irish import who theyear before threw two finalists in theAustralian Cup (Shear Brown and KelvinBrown).Unfortunately he was like so many goodsires, underused. From my litter of three were Pete'sChoice who was going to be anything untilshe was attacked by three Alsatians whilewalking the golf course at night.Brown Tear was a multiple winner onmany tracks, and Tear's Laddie was abrilliant bitch the winner of eight straightat Olympic Park and Sandown.Rod's advice was always give the bestfeed for rearing and lots of running whichI did with these dogs who were reared byJack Kelly at Endeven Hills.I then moved to Queensland and tookTear's Laddie with me. I soon retired herand put her to Kismet Range who couldhave been anything but his time was cutshort by a twisted bowel. Two of the pups were Markaboy andTear's Girl, both exceptional dogs in theirown right.Tear's Girl threw numerous winnersincluding Trojan Tears and Tango Tears, the start of Mick and Helen Ivers' strongline which is still producing winners now.Unfortunately soon after that we gotmore into training than breeding. But eight years ago I said to my wifeLil we would have to start again.HE'S big, brashand opinionated, buthe's also one of themost astute greyhoundbreeders Queenslandhas seen. JohnEdwards has been inthe game for 50 years. He learnt from thebest and ALWAYSseems to have a smartdog, a top gradeperformer. He andwife Lil are always inthe winner's circle. The Journal askedBig John Edwards totell us his story. Putinto his words whathis beliefs are inbreeding thegreyhound. At the time we had a bitch calledMarkaboy's Girl (113 starts).I had to look for a strong, well bred dog(Hanson Diamond, 98 starts) that wouldgive me the genetic strength. No injuries.Take the best bitch from the litter andbreed with her. That bitch is Girl Diamond who had151 starts and was a winner of 11 at AlbionPark and many placings. She was a strong600m and 520m bitch whoalso won over 510m and630m at Ipswich and 479mat Beenleigh. Now you have chasingstrength. The most importantthing for bitches you wantto breed with is don't givethem hormones.Take the chance. If you work the dogshard enough very rarelywill they come on season.Girl Diamond nevercame on until she was fourand finished racing. Then all you have to dois put her to a speed sireand you should havesuccess.Girl Diamond went toYo Yo's Boy for her firstmating and the litter wonmore than 50 races.Diamond Harry is stillracing and winning. Her second litter toBearability has won 52 races and are justtwo years and two months old. Theyinclude Ellie's Diamond, Bears Diamond,Steele Diamond, Diamond Dragur, RosieBourke, Diamond Harry, Special Diamondand Keen Diamond. Her next litter to Surf Lorian areunbelievable as they have just been brokenin and will be anything. Her latest litter to Bitability Bale are acouple of months old and look wonderful.Bitability Bale is another Queensland sirewhich is underused, reasonably priced andmost essentially serves the bitch. No AI or frozen semen ... which in myopinion, will have severe consequencesdown the track. I will not go to a stud dogunless I can have a natural service. No hormones, natural service, biglitters. Girl Diamond's litters have been 10pups, 10 pups, 12 pups and 11 pups. Itspeaks for itself.I have always used local sires as Ibelieve we don't support the local dogenough and they are as good as anythroughout Australia and reasonablypriced compared to many others.Unfortunately we never hear howmany don't make it from the highly pricedsires, only the winners. One would like to see a register of pupsborn, pups who make it to the track andpups who win and place.I don't think there would be muchbetween a stud dog who gets three servesa year to one who gets 144 serves a year ...pro rata. Now breeding these pups is taken overby my wife Lillian who makes sure theyare fed nothing but the best cow's milk, meat, very little chicken and plenty ofbones which is natural calcium. The (June, 2006) Journal Page 28
Spotlight on Breedingby John EdwardsUnfortunately nowadays you can't getsheep's heads which are the best. The pups are wormed once a month, get plenty of iron and running specially inthe nighttime when dogs seem to run a lotmore as it is not as hot. With all our litters, which we onlybreed for ourselves mainly, we always seemto get two or three that soon make it to topgrade at Albion Park.I hope this may help someone who iscontemplating breeding in the future, butone has to be patient as it does not happenovernight.I have taken eight years to get back ontrack. We now have Girl Diamond andpotential broodbitches like Ellie's Diamondand Rosie Bourke and others to come.Prairie Peg ...and much moreEven John Edwards is probably notaware of just how in-bred his originaldamline is.He started with Tem Tear, a daughter ofTemlee-Rogey Girland the saturationof in-breedingcontained in theline and continuingto today's stars ofthe line in KobbleCreek etc isfascinating.Firstly RogeyGirl carried aRasmussen Factorto the half sistersDreams Dian andRipple Jet. Temleealso carries a RFto the littermatesTop Linen andBrenda's Daughter. So Tem Tear was the result of a sire anddam which both carried a RF within thefirst five generations.Edwards outcrossed Tem Tear by puttingher to the import Brown Lad (The GrandSilver-Rosemoth), or so he thought. BrownLad is one of the most in-bred dogsimported to this country. His litter brother Brave Bran was anoutstanding sire success in Ireland frominitially limited opportunities.Brave Bran and Brown Lad's damRosemoth carried a RF to the half sistersPrairie Peg (a legend) and RosemountVixen. Brown Lad then also had a RF tothe half sisters The Grand Mist and PrairieVixen (dam of Prairie Peg). Brown Ladhad another RF to the half brothers PrairieFlash and Pigalle Wonder. And to top this off he also carriedanother RF to the half brother/sisterBallinclea Dancer and The Grand Duchess(both out of famous Quare Fire). As Temlee's grandsire Tivoli Dreamer isby Pigalle Wonder (out of Prairie Peg)there is a huge link to Brown Lad's heavilyin-bred pedigree. So when John Edwards bred TearsLaddie, he had a broodbitch potentialsaturated with some of the most famousAUSTRALIAN WINNING LINESVolume 13 - 2005 $50 (inc postage & handling)Containing all the usual features of the greyhound year: City Winners; Sires, Dams &Maternal Grandsires of City Winners; Western Australia; Australian Feature RaceWinners; Sires, Dams, Maternal Grandsires and Pedigrees of Feature Race Winners;Australian Track Records and Overseas Feature Winners.Cheques/Money Orders payable to:Peter Rose, PO Box 330, Jimboomba, Qld, 4280.Ph (07) 5548 6687broodbitches the world has seen. But it was to get even better. When John was putting Tear’s Laddie toKismet Range (Royal Rumpus-Cindy'sRange) he obviously would have thought hewas outcrossing the bitch. But WaverlySupreme (grandsire of Kismet Range) alsocarries Prairie Peg in his immediatedamline. The Kismet Range-Tear’s Laddie matingproduced Markaboy and Tear’s Girl, whowhile having more Prairie Peg put intotheir pedigree, also had a RF to Elsie Moss(through the half brothers Mister Moss andClay Moss). When it came to mating Tear’s Girl toNew Tears, it might again have seemed afairly outcross mating. But New Tears carried a close-updouble-up of Temlee and New Tears’granddam Rowan Vale is a real example ofthe RF (she has two). The result of thismating of New Tears-Tear’s Girl was thechampion Trojan Tears who obviously bythis time carried an even further saturationof Prairie Peg.Was it any wonder then that she tooproved a great broodbitch as well as agreat stayer. The best of Trojan Tears’ progeny wasKobble Creek (Gun Law Osti-Trojan Tears)and he is saturated with FIVE close-upcrosses of Temlee (more Prairie Peg). But we’ve also seen that Tear’s Girlcarried a RF to Elsie Moss. Pitstock Park, dam of Brother Fox the grandsire ofKobble Creek, also had a RF to Elsie Moss.Temlee was out of a bitch by Mister Moss (ason of Elsie Moss) so the saturation thereof Elsie Moss is huge as well.Let’s go even further with Tear’s Laddieand look at a bitch called Terror Tears(Captain Standby-Trojan Tears). While she might seem a bit of anoutcross being by the Ivers own dogFree Progesterone Test - No pups, full refundELITE STATE $2750(Just The Best-Spark Again)BLACK ENFORCER $1650*(Token Prince-Miss Corleone)SOLVE THE PUZZLE $1650(Light Of Fire-Magic Riddle)EIFFELLA $1100(Token Prince-Miss Eiffel)MODERN ASSASSIN $990(Awesome Assassin-Magic Gairn)CYRUS THE VIRUS $880(Black Shiraz-Mystery Bird)FORTIFIED RUSH* $770(Fortified Speed-Greys Arizona)LOCHINVAR JET $550(Head Honcho-Light Sentence)* Plus surgicialCaptain Standby (Grove Whisper-Bay CityRoller), he still carries a cross of WaverlySupreme (and we have seen he tracesdirectly to Prairie Peg), and his seconddam the champion Bay Road Queen is byTegimi who was out of a sister to Temlee(more Prairie Peg). When Terror Tears was mated toBobniak she produced champion stayer TipTop Tears and a fantastic litter. She went tohim twice with great results both times.Bobniak, while by the import FarloeMelody*, is out of a Brother Fox bitch(more Temlee and a RF to Elsie Mossthrough Brother Fox’s dam). And Bobniaktraces directly to the Temlee bitch Osti Lee.Farloe Melody is in-bred to PrairiePeg’s son Prairie Flash. He also has a RF to Sheila At Last, damof legend Monalee Champion. GroveWhisper* carries a cross of MonaleeChampion to link up with the double inFarloe Melody*, and also has a RF to litterbrothers (out of the famed broodbitchMillie Hawthorn). It gets even more interesting when youconsider the 1955 Irish Oaks winnerPrairie Peg, so dominant in all thesepedigrees, was herself in-bred to the litterbrother/sister Mad Tanist and Astra 2x3.And even further, Mad Tanist, thechampion Irish sire of the 40s, was himselfbred with TWO RF to the sisters NeldinsImprover and Feale Wave, and thebrothers Stormont and Cheerful Charger.EDITOR'S NOTE:The Rasmussen Factor is when adominant female is represented within thefirst five generations of a pedigree on bothsides of the pedigree through two sons, twodaughters, or a son and a daughter. It is atheory suggested by leading USthoroughbred breeding analyst LeonRasmussen.Rocky Ridge'WeCare'FarmSAM CAUCHIJones Rd, Calga, NSWPH (02) 43751145Fax: (02) 43751129Mob: 0418 428786The (June, 2006) Journal Page 29
