Syd NorrisI GREW up as a youngster knowinggreyhound racing only up a straight track inQueensland. My first racing experience was at Kedronin the late 40s.During this time and to the mid-50sstraight racing was conducted at Kedron,Loganholme, Rocklea, Southport, Ipswich,Capalaba and Beenleigh. But in the south, circle racing was alreadypopular so it was only a matter of time beforeit was introduced here. We had alreadyregularly raced at Lismore, Casino, Ballinaand Tweed on the circle.Queensland's first circle racing was atBeenleigh, introduced by Harry Pledger. Itwas a very tight track and it was one trackyou had to give a dog a look at before startingit there. The first turn from the short boxes was anightmare. It wasn't long before Beenleigh was thehub of greyhound racing here and we reallysaw some big names, dogs and trainers.Regulars at the June carnival for theQueensland Cup were Bob Doak, Les Brett,Vince Whittaker, Jack Irwin and FrankBellamy. We always made sure we were there forthe carnival to see some of the best dogs inAustralia.Beenleigh was a punters paradise. Theprizemoney sometimes wasn't even worthcollecting. The betting ring was about 15strong during Cup time, but regularly a dozenat least. And they'd let you on.One I remember was Don Longley whoreally was flamboyant. He sometimes hadpeople fighting among themselves to bet withhim ... he would bet well over the odds almostevery race.Don ended up on the rails at the horses.Harry Pledger did a great job getting someof the greats to race during his Beenleighcarnival each year. Obviously the best wasZoom Top although unfortunately I didn't getto see her at Beenleigh, but I was at HaroldPark one night when she ran.She was the best all-round dog I've everseen. She wasn't a champion, she was a freak. She wasn't the best sprinter I've ever seen, nor the best stayer I've ever seen, but she coulddo it all.She could win 300m and two days laterwin over 700m. She defied all odds in herpreparation. She started 136 times for 68 winsand 39 placings. She broke 15 records andearned more than $60,000.As a sidelight, the best dog I've seen raceis Flying Amy.I remember some really fun days atBeenleigh. One in particular when the luremalfunctioned even before the race meeting.A local, called Albert Norman, was amotorbike speedway rider and the cluborganized for him to ride his bike pulling thelure behind.Owners and trainers had the option to race.Albert rode his bike on the dog racetrack, pulling the lure along. He was fine in the shortraces, but when the distances got longer therewere a few problems. It didn't worry us, we won a race withBillen Boy à bless his hard chasing heart. Hewas a better chaser of the motorbike than thehare.By this time Kedron, Rocklea, Ipswichand Southport straight tracks were closed. The Metropolitan Club opened again atLawnton which suited us because it was justdown the road.Lawnton's opening was a big affair. Plentyof people and some great racing.Racing for us by this time was at Tweed,Lawnton and Beenleigh and we wouldoccasionally head over the border to Lismoreand Casino.Tweed was a night meeting on Mondaysat the old track. Distances were 400 yards and600 yards, and we raced there every Mondaynight. Our bitch Quality Seal was a top graderat the Tweed and easily our best of the time. She was by Sam Billen-Soft Tune. She was areal home-bred.I owned the sire as well. He was a reallygood straight tracker at Kedron and Capalaba.MemoriesPacific ParkStraight TrackTrialling300 metresAvailable most morningsfrom 7.30amAppointments are requiredPhoneTom Tzouvelisfor all bookings0414 827392The front cover of a Tweed racebook from November 22,1941. The Coolangatta Handicap (525yds) went to Dong (AllCash-Soubrette) for owner-trainer H Rixon coming off 18ydsto beat Dugold (15yds) and Weenie's Hope (19yds). Dongearned four pounds for the victory, second a pound and third10 shillings.Quality Seal eventually went to Sydneyand made the final of the NSW St Leger, theonly bitch to make it. If she had drawn insideshe could have won it.We put her to Pine Top when she went tostud and none were any good. We had plentyof offers to buy the pups, but wouldn't sellany ... worse luck.It was a time when Les Stone of LismoreThe ability to freeze canine semen enables long term storageand offers many benefits to breeders.Preservation of genetic lines.Selective breeding programs.Permits use of dogs that have developed poor breeding habits.Import/export of proven genetic material.Insurance.Control of inherited disease. For further information feel free to contact us.34 Sixth Avenue, Windsor QLD 4030Ph/Fax: 07 3857 1431 E-mail: ccooper3@bigpond.net.au227 Goldmine Road, OrmeauBreaking-inRe-educationPre-training$60per weekwas sending us dogs.
