Sweeping changes at Albion ParkSWEEPING changes have beenannounced to the racing and prizemoneyschedule for Albion Park, starting on July 1.From this date the following Classes ofmeetings will be held:* The first two Mondays of each monthwill be Class 1 meetings with existingMonday Class 1 prizemoney being paid.* The remaining Mondays of eachmonth will be Class 2 meetings.* Thursday racing will remainunchanged.* Friday racing will see the introductionof Class 3 Non-Penalty meetings for reducedprizemoney.The GRAQ and Brisbane Club haveagreed on a prizemoney payout ratio that willposition the Brisbane Club to achieve abalanced budget in the 2006-07 financial year.GRAQ Chair Phil Bennett said: "TheBrisbane Club has been paying out anextremely high percentage of its allocationprovided by the GRAQ as prizemoney in thepast four financial years, including 95% in2002-03, 100% in 2003-04, 95% in 2004-05and an amount anticipated to be in excess of90% this financial year."The Club has therefore had little choicebut to utilise its cash reserves to fund the restof its operations."After negotiations with the Club, we haveagreed on a prizemoney payout ratio of 80%of the club's allocation for the 2006-07 year.Overall, the Brisbane Club will pay outapproximately $3.85 million in prizemoneynext financial year."The Board has recently finalised itsbudget for the 2006-07 financial year and inview of the decline in income fromQueensland Race Product Co Ltd thisfinancial year and there being no sign of thedispute between ThoroughVision and SkyRacing being resolved in the short term, theBoard is unable to make an increase in theallocation to this Club or any other Club inthe next financial year.(Editor's Note: The TVN, Sky dispute hasnow been resolved)"The allocations to all clubs next year willbe maintained at the same levels as the currentfinancial year."The GRA will record a sizeableoperating loss this financial year and isbudgeting for a smaller loss next financialyear."Despite the decline in UNiTAB overallturnover in the past nine months, turnover ongreyhound racing has increased marginallyover the same period."Brisbane Club President Michael Byrnesaid: "The club's reserves have diminished bymore than $1million during the past fouryears."Obviously this cannot continue and asmuch as we would like to maintain our presentprizemoney structure, we now need to take amuch more conservative approach to ourfiscal management."The next 12 months will see the Clubpositioning itself for its future, and strategieswill include actively promoting the club's racenights to social and sporting clubs, attractingand retaining sponsors, reviewing its costs andpaying out prizemoney that the club canafford to pay."The introduction of Class 3 Non-Penaltymeetings comes in as a trial for six months,after the concept was raised by members of aGRAQ industry forum.Greyhounds will be graded in the Non-Penalty meetings based on their Class 3grading as at 1 July 2006. They will not bepenalised a grade for winning an event at theFriday meetings.Prizemoney will be at a reduced rate ofapproximately $630 per race, with the winnerreceiving $360.Mr Byrne said: "The major benefit of thenon-penalty meetings will be that trainers willbe able to introduce their greyhounds toAlbion Park and give them experience at theKirsty O'BrienGAP Newstrack before working them through theclasses."This will give connections an opportunityto win more races with their greyhounds."The club in conjunction with the GRAQwill undertake a review of the newprizemoney distribution formula and FridayClass 3 non-penalty meetings at the end ofOctober 2006.The GRAQ Board also resolved that asof 1 July, reserve rights for Thursday meetingswill be removed.The Board considers that as the Thursdaynight meeting is the industry's flagshipmeeting, the best greyhounds nominated forthe meetings should be drawn based on theRace Order Selection criteria.Currently greyhounds which were drawnas a reserve and do not gain a start at theprevious meeting are included first for thefollowing Thursday meeting, regardless ofform. New owners have anexpectation the dog will fit in well with theirfamily and lifestyle.The first part of the process is a phoneinterview, where we talk about the reasonswhy the person wants to adopt a greyhound.There are so many reasons why a greyhoundmakes an excellent choice for a family.Some have young children and need a dogthat is tolerant and friendly, and easy to handleon a lead. With their children bringing friendsover it is important to have a dog that is notaggressive and does not display guardingbehaviour towards strangers.Other people are busy with full-time work,and need a dog that is happy to lie around allday and does not require many hours ofexercise and training.Retirees might want a dog that is not tooboisterous or energetic.If we know what a person wants from adog we are able to select exactly the rightgreyhound from all of the dogs we haveavailable. It is also important we find out whatother pets the family has, so we can matchthem with a dog that will get along well withthem.Many people who apply to adopt have acat, but only half our dogs have been assessedas being suitable to live with a cat.We ask questions about where thegreyhound will be expected to sleep, andspend most of its time.It is unacceptable a greyhound should goto a home where it will spend its retirementin isolation from people and other dogs. Dogsare pack animals and need company and dailysocial interaction.Most racing greyhounds are used tohaving other dogs around, as well as dailyattention from their trainer. It would be unfairto move a greyhound from this environmentinto one where it would be lonely.As well as asking questions, we provideinformation on how to care for a greyhound.A care handbook is provided to people whoapply to adopt a dog from us.This book is also available on request forpeople who have acquired a pet greyhounddirectly from a trainer, or from another place.Greyhounds have specific dietary, handling,grooming and veterinary requirements thatnew owners need to be aware of.Unless a person can meet all of the needsa greyhound has, they will not be offered adog.After the phone interview we make a homevisit, or if the home is too far out of Brisbane,we require the potential adopter to supply uswith photos of their yard, fences and gates.What we are looking for is a securelyfenced yard that a greyhound will not be ableto escape from, as well as the area being freeof things that may hurt a greyhound runningaround at high speed.It is essential there is shelter availablefrom the sun or from storms. Sometimes weadvise people of modifications that will needto be made before we allow a greyhound togo to its new home.Once a family shows us they arecommitted to owning a greyhound, they canprovide everything the greyhound will need,and they are taking good care of the otherpets in their household, we match them witha suitable dog and another greyhound goesto start a new life as a much loved family pet.The (June, 2006) Journal Page 36
