12Project modelearnerIn 2011, Box Hill Institute launched an integratedstrategy to improve outcomes for learners bydelivering innovation to the Vocational Educationand Training (VET) sector.Focusing on the needs of theUnique to Box Hill Institute, the AppliedVocational Study Skills (AVSS) programseeks to increase learner retention, in linewith government policy, through a seriesof interventions for all Box Hill Institutestudents.How does it work?Prior to commencing training, all Box HillInstitute students are assessed using theAustralian Council for Educational Research(ACER) diagnostic tool, called the vocationalindicator.This assessment aims to obtain informationon student basic skills in the areas ofliteracy, numeracy and reasoning.Based on the information and overallresults of the ACER testing, AVSS teachersare allocated and timetabled to vocationalclasses. AVSS teachers use the informationfrom the ACER basic skills assessment toplan and deliver a program that provideslearners with support to complete theirvocational course.Most importantly, with the embeddedintegrated Literacy, Learning and Numeracy(LL&N) program, students work withteachers during class time and have theopportunity to meet with the LL&N teachersat other times if they require furtherassistance.What benefits does the program offer?The AVSS program improves the overallstudent experience. With improved and/orenhanced LL&N skills, students are betterplaced to meet the requirements of theirenrolled vocational course.By enhancing learner capacity to applybasic skills to industry tasks, thisprogram increases the depth of learnerunderstanding of important concepts andideas in many aspects of their industrycompetencies.
