12Project modelearnerIn 2011, <strong>Box</strong> <strong>Hill</strong> <strong>Institute</strong> launched an integratedstrategy to improve outcomes for learners bydelivering innovation to <strong>the</strong> Vocational Educationand Training (VET) sector.Focusing on <strong>the</strong> needs <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>Unique to <strong>Box</strong> <strong>Hill</strong> <strong>Institute</strong>, <strong>the</strong> AppliedVocational Study Skills (AVSS) programseeks to increase learner retention, in linewith government policy, through a series<strong>of</strong> interventions for all <strong>Box</strong> <strong>Hill</strong> <strong>Institute</strong>students.How does it work?Prior to commencing training, all <strong>Box</strong> <strong>Hill</strong><strong>Institute</strong> students are assessed using <strong>the</strong>Australian Council for Educational Research(ACER) diagnostic tool, called <strong>the</strong> vocationalindicator.This assessment aims to obtain informationon student basic skills in <strong>the</strong> areas <strong>of</strong>literacy, numeracy and reasoning.Based on <strong>the</strong> information and overallresults <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> ACER testing, AVSS teachersare allocated and timetabled to vocationalclasses. AVSS teachers use <strong>the</strong> informationfrom <strong>the</strong> ACER basic skills assessment toplan and deliver a program that provideslearners with support to complete <strong>the</strong>irvocational course.Most importantly, with <strong>the</strong> embeddedintegrated Literacy, Learning and Numeracy(LL&N) program, students work withteachers during class time and have <strong>the</strong>opportunity to meet with <strong>the</strong> LL&N teachersat o<strong>the</strong>r times if <strong>the</strong>y require fur<strong>the</strong>rassistance.What benefits does <strong>the</strong> program <strong>of</strong>fer?The AVSS program improves <strong>the</strong> overallstudent experience. With improved and/orenhanced LL&N skills, students are betterplaced to meet <strong>the</strong> requirements <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>irenrolled vocational course.By enhancing learner capacity to applybasic skills to industry tasks, thisprogram increases <strong>the</strong> depth <strong>of</strong> learnerunderstanding <strong>of</strong> important concepts andideas in many aspects <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir industrycompetencies. Similarly, it contributesto employees’ capacity to access safetyinformation, and to undertake on-goingtraining in <strong>the</strong> workplace.The outcomes <strong>of</strong> AVSS are both improvedvocational training completion ratesand <strong>the</strong> potential for improved learningperformances for learners.Student enrols into a course at <strong>Box</strong> <strong>Hill</strong> <strong>Institute</strong>and attends orientation➞ ➞Student is assessed in <strong>the</strong> areas <strong>of</strong>literacy, numeracy and reasoningAVSS teacher plans delivery program to ensure<strong>the</strong> integration <strong>of</strong> LL&N skills into <strong>the</strong> classroom<strong>Box</strong> <strong>Hill</strong> <strong>Institute</strong> students learning in class.<strong>Out</strong>OfThe<strong>Box</strong> AUGUST 2012www.boxhill.edu.au
