положај ове земље. Ограђена Пиринејима на североистоку,<br />
Шпанија је de facto вековима била заштићена од<br />
непријатељских продора из тог дела Европе и по дефиницији<br />
је типична полуострвска земља (додуше уз Португал<br />
и Андору), полуострва названог по поменутом<br />
планинском венцу. С друге стране, на крајњем југу излази<br />
на Херкулове стубове, односно мореуз од светске<br />
геостратешке важности – Гибралтар. Ништа мање стратешки<br />
важна није ни отвореност ка Атлантику. Одатле<br />
ће кретати многи морепловци, визионари који ће од<br />
Шпаније направити праву поморску велесилу. Све три<br />
ствари ће у великој мери предодредити њену целокупну<br />
судбину и историјске токове. Свему овоме треба додати<br />
још једну занимљивост која одликује Шпанију и утиче<br />
на то да управо она буде чувар Средоземља. То су специфична<br />
острва разбацана широм водених површина<br />
недалеко од копна - Балеарска, Канарска и три мање<br />
групе острва недалеко од Африке, плус две енклаве у<br />
Мароку.<br />
Друга перцепција о овој земљи која се јавља неутралном<br />
посматрачу јесте менталитет људи који живе на овим<br />

and Andorra), of a peninsula named after the aforementioned<br />
mountain range. On the other hand, at the far south<br />
it forms a finger of land that points to the Pillars of Hercules,<br />
or rather the strait of global geo-strategic importance – the<br />

Gibraltar. No less historically significant is Spain’s openness<br />
toward the Atlantic Ocean. From here numerous seafarers<br />
and visionaries set out who would turn Spain into a<br />
genuine naval superpower. All three characteristic will to<br />
a large extent predetermine its entire destiny and historical<br />
trends. One other interesting fact which presents Spain’s<br />
distinguishing feature and greatly affects its status of the<br />
guardian of the Mediterranean should also be added to all<br />
of these considerations. The specific islands scattered over<br />
water surfaces in close proximity of the mainland – Balearic,<br />
Canary, and three small groups of islands near Africa, plus<br />
two enclaves in Morocco.<br />
The other perception of this country which comes into the<br />
mind of an unbiased observer is the mentality of people who<br />
live on this territory. The prevailing temper which rules the<br />
everyday lives of Spaniards, amiability, openness, but sometimes<br />
even refined arrogance, straightforwardness, enormous<br />
sensitivity and indiscretion can be compared with the atmosphere<br />
prevailing in the corrida (bullfighting ring). So much<br />
excitement, disappointment, rage and love in one place, a<br />
place where the boundaries between extreme emotions begin<br />
to fade. Indeed, the corrida is a symbol of an intense charge<br />
of most diverse feelings and a kind of catharsis, which is precisely<br />
what Spain was going through in the 1980s.
