The Criterion has signifi cance as the fi nest of the fi ve remaining hotelbuildings constructed in this style in the CBD; the others which all remain operational are the Criterion(Sussex Street), the Great Southern, the Tudor Inn, and the Wynyard. It also has aesthetic signifi canceas an important corner element and <strong>for</strong> its contribution to the streetscape of the immediate area. Thehotel has historic significance <strong>for</strong> carrying on the name of the Criterion Theatre which <strong>for</strong>merly occupiedthe site. The hotel has social signifi cance as a fi ne, largely intact, and fully operational example of asmall inner city corner hotel.
