Highlights of 2005/06<br />

In <strong>the</strong> last academic year we raised €86 million –<br />

<strong>the</strong> largest amount ever <strong>in</strong> a s<strong>in</strong>gle year – and our<br />

endowment fund grew <strong>to</strong> €75 million (based on<br />

current market value). Alumni contributed an<br />

extraord<strong>in</strong>ary €4.2 million <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> school: €2.6<br />

million through <strong>the</strong> <strong>INSEAD</strong> Alumni Fund and<br />

an additional €1.6 million <strong>in</strong> one-off gifts.<br />

A major highlight of <strong>the</strong> year was of course <strong>the</strong><br />

pledge from <strong>the</strong> Abu Dhabi Education Council<br />

<strong>to</strong> create our centre <strong>for</strong> research and executive<br />

education <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> United Arab Emirates. <strong>With</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

agreement signed <strong>in</strong> September 2006, <strong>the</strong> centre<br />

will build up its activities through 2007, with<br />

research projects <strong>in</strong> healthcare and corporate<br />

governance already set <strong>to</strong> be amongst <strong>the</strong> first<br />

beneficiaries. Executive Education programmes<br />

will also run be<strong>for</strong>e <strong>the</strong> end of this academic year.<br />

The impact on <strong>INSEAD</strong>’s research output of this<br />

development will be significant. More than this,<br />

<strong>the</strong> centre is a unique opportunity <strong>to</strong> both learn<br />

about and contribute <strong>to</strong> a fasc<strong>in</strong>at<strong>in</strong>g and<br />

important region of <strong>the</strong> world.<br />

Ano<strong>the</strong>r important event this year was <strong>the</strong><br />

open<strong>in</strong>g of <strong>the</strong> regional research centre near<br />

Tel Aviv <strong>in</strong> Israel <strong>thanks</strong> <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> Caesarea Edmond<br />

Benjam<strong>in</strong> de Rothschild Foundation<br />

and <strong>the</strong>ir deputy chairman Avraham Bigger.<br />

At <strong>the</strong> same time, we are look<strong>in</strong>g <strong>for</strong>ward <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

entrepreneurship <strong>in</strong> Mumbai, <strong>the</strong> result of a gift<br />

from <strong>INSEAD</strong> friend and <strong>for</strong>mer banker, Vic<strong>to</strong>r<br />

Menezes. Our aim is <strong>for</strong> <strong>INSEAD</strong> <strong>to</strong> connect with<br />

India’s lead<strong>in</strong>g entrepreneurs, absorb<strong>in</strong>g ideas<br />

and ga<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>sight <strong>in</strong><strong>to</strong> how <strong>the</strong>ir key ch<strong>all</strong>enges<br />

are resolved. The work of <strong>the</strong> resident research<br />

staff will be overseen by <strong>the</strong> Rudolf and Valeria<br />

Maag International Centre <strong>for</strong> Entrepreneurship,<br />

based <strong>in</strong> S<strong>in</strong>gapore and itself <strong>the</strong> result of a<br />

generous gift <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> previous academic year.<br />

O<strong>the</strong>r achievements from previous years <strong>have</strong><br />

borne fur<strong>the</strong>r fruit. The André and Rosalie<br />

Hoffmann Chair <strong>in</strong> Family Enterprise was<br />

awarded <strong>to</strong> Professor Morten Hansen, while<br />
