The fifth-seeded Golden Eagles had a tough match against fourthseededSchoolcraft College (16–1) of Michigan, who beat the Golden Eagles 2–1.After the devastating defeat, the Golden Eagles headed into the second roundof competition against Anne Arundel Community College of Maryland. Winner ofthat game headed into the fifth-seed bracket.The Golden Eagles sat at fifth seed against the eighth-seeded Anne Arundel. TheGolden Eagles defeated Anne Arundel 3-2 with just a minute and second before thegame went into overtime.Monica Lubin scored two goals in the game including the game winner, andEmi Yamamoto added one.After battling it out at nationals Nov. 21, the Golden Eagles earned sixth placeafter Iowa Western’s Chamea Palmer scored a lone goal in the first half, whichended the Golden Eagles’ journey.The Golden Eagles’ final record was 19–5–1. Coach Jim Gardner said, “I’m reallyproud of the girls for the way they played.”Throughout the 2010 season the LCCC Golden Eagles swooped their competitionin ravage fashion, devouring all who came before them. The women battledhard and excelled in defense, shutting out their opponents’ 11 of the 22 gamesplayed this season.The Golden Eagles ended their season sixth in the nation, which is the highestranking since their last ranking in 2007 when they were fourth in the nation fortwo-year colleges.Golden Eagles’ forward Emi Yamamoto made this year’s NJCAA national ranking,placing seventh in the nation with 55 total points. Although theEagles had been ableto win previously,LCCC couldn’t get itsfooting and lost toGarden City 63–95.Three days prior,LCCC hosted NewMexico Junior College,Garden City andEastern WyomingCollege in the GoldenEagles Classic, Nov.19–20.Opening the firstnight against NewMexico Nov. 19, LCCCcame out strong withthe goal of scoring.But LCCC’s defensewas its Achilles heel,falling to New Mexico78–70.Coach Jason Ficcasaid, “For 30 minutesof the game wedid pretty poor ondefense,” but havingsuch a hard focus onpurely scoring pointsallowed the opposingteam to stack uppoints as well. But thewin just barely slippedaway from LCCC.After losing for thefirst time at home,LCCC regrouped Nov.20 to beat Garden City77–70. In this gamethe team slowed downmore, focused on thetechnical aspects ofthe game play andheld Garden City atbay.Ficca said: “Tonightwe kind of changedthe mentality a littlebit and said: ‘We’regoing to stop you. Wedon’t know how manypoints we’re going toscore, but we’re goingto make sure youscore less than us.’”The game wasclose once again.With a margin of a fewpoints and only twominutes remainingit was either team’sgame. LCCC managedto hold onto its smalllead for the win.On Nov. 13, EWCgot its chance to challengeLCCC after ithad lost to LCCC onNov. 9. But this timethe home court advantagewas all EWC’s.The teams battled itout in a close game onthe court.LCCC overlookedEWC as competitionafter having previouslybeaten the Lancers.LCCC’s defense wasweak once again,focusing more onoffense. LCCC alsokept repeating one ofits biggest mistakesso far this season withturnovers to EWC.Although the gamewas close, LCCC wasunable to beat EWCfor a second time andlost 96-89.On Nov. 9 LCCChad enjoyed homecourt advantageagainst EWC. Thecrowd helped set thetone as LCCC shutdown EWC 86-56.SophomoreTerrence Dent describedthe game asa bit of a slow start.The team took a littlelonger to click becausethe players were stilllearning one another’splaying styles. Butonce the GoldenEagles clicked, theyshowed what potentialthey held.The team hadstarted its first gamesof the season againstSnow College andSalt Lake CommunityCollege, Nov. 5–6, inwhat Ficca describedas “the toughest conditionswe’ll play in allyear,” referring to thedrive to Utah and theback-to-back gamesthe team playedagainst two of thetoughest teams theywill play.He said the scenewas hostile for theaway team. The crowdwas large and fullof spirit.
