Although theEagles had been ableto win previously,LCCC couldn’t get itsfooting and lost toGarden City 63–95.Three days prior,LCCC hosted NewMexico Junior College,Garden City andEastern WyomingCollege in the GoldenEagles Classic, Nov.19–20.Opening the firstnight against NewMexico Nov. 19, LCCCcame out strong withthe goal of scoring.But LCCC’s defensewas its Achilles heel,falling to New Mexico78–70.Coach Jason Ficcasaid, “For 30 minutesof the game wedid pretty poor ondefense,” but havingsuch a hard focus onpurely scoring pointsallowed the opposingteam to stack uppoints as well. But thewin just barely slippedaway from LCCC.After losing for thefirst time at home,LCCC regrouped Nov.20 to beat Garden City77–70. In this gamethe team slowed downmore, focused on thetechnical aspects ofthe game play andheld Garden City atbay.Ficca said: “Tonightwe kind of changedthe mentality a littlebit and said: ‘We’regoing to stop you. Wedon’t know how manypoints we’re going toscore, but we’re goingto make sure youscore less than us.’”The game wasclose once again.With a margin of a fewpoints and only twominutes remainingit was either team’sgame. LCCC managedto hold onto its smalllead for the win.On Nov. 13, EWCgot its chance to challengeLCCC after ithad lost to LCCC onNov. 9. But this timethe home court advantagewas all EWC’s.The teams battled itout in a close game onthe court.LCCC overlookedEWC as competitionafter having previouslybeaten the Lancers.LCCC’s defense wasweak once again,focusing more onoffense. LCCC alsokept repeating one ofits biggest mistakesso far this season withturnovers to EWC.Although the gamewas close, LCCC wasunable to beat EWCfor a second time andlost 96-89.On Nov. 9 LCCChad enjoyed homecourt advantageagainst EWC. Thecrowd helped set thetone as LCCC shutdown EWC 86-56.SophomoreTerrence Dent describedthe game asa bit of a slow start.The team took a littlelonger to click becausethe players were stilllearning one another’splaying styles. Butonce the GoldenEagles clicked, theyshowed what potentialthey held.The team hadstarted its first gamesof the season againstSnow College andSalt Lake CommunityCollege, Nov. 5–6, inwhat Ficca describedas “the toughest conditionswe’ll play in allyear,” referring to thedrive to Utah and theback-to-back gamesthe team playedagainst two of thetoughest teams theywill play.He said the scenewas hostile for theaway team. The crowdwas large and fullof spirit.
