The survey looked at how well colleges used technologyto enhance the student experience and increase educatoreffectiveness. Specifically, the survey noted colleges’ use ofonline registration, distance learning, tutoring and advisoryservices. Technology training for students and faculty andWeb 2.0 social and collaborative capabilities were also keyindicators of success.The online announcement can be viewed at http://www.convergemag.com/awards/digital-community-colleges/.Speech team places secondin Northwest College meetThe LCCC speech and debate team polished off anothersuccessful weekend at Northwest College in Powell, Nov 5–6,placing second overall in the team sweepstakes.Among the successes, Mark Schaad placed first in proseinterpretation and eighth as best speaker in debate. ConroyStout placed first in impromptu speaking, second in communicationanalysis, fourth in dramatic interpretation, and wasnamed the fourth best speaker in debate.The Evan Bradley and Brittney Thaler team placed third inthe open division of parliamentary debate. Solo Thaler alsogained honors by placing fourth in extemporaneous speakingand was a semifinalist in impromptu speaking. Thaler wasalso named the seventh best speaker in debate.Bradley also placed fifth in impromptu speaking, dramaticinterpretation and after dinner speaking.The team is coached by Zeke Sorenson, Ami Goehring andDave Gear.Meat evaluation teamtakes fifth in national contestThe Laramie County Community College meat evaluationteam placed fifth overall in its first contest Nov. 1.The brand-new team competed in the National MeatEvaluation Contest in Plainview, Texas, and brought homemany awards. These awards include: fifth, beef grading; fifth,beef judging; sixth, lamb judging; fourth, pork judging; fifth,total placings; sixth place, total questions; fifth place overall.Also, Russell Burton earned the fourth place spot in totalplacings, and Kayla Foster earned the spirit award.The coach is Kelli Griffith, agriculture instructor.Grant awarded to programfor third consecutive yearThe wind energy program at Laramie County CommunityCollege recently received a $40,000 grant from the WalterScott Foundation.This is the third year in a row that the wind energy technologyprogram at LCCC has received grant money from thefoundation. The money will be used to fund scholarships andto purchase supplies and equipment for the wind energy laboratory.The wind energy program at LCCC has several otheractive grants at this time, totaling more than $1.5 million. Theother grants come from the National Science Foundation, theDepartment of Energy, American Recovery and ReinvestmentAct and the State Energy Sector Partnership.United Way goal surpassedMichelle Kallhoff, executive assistant to the vice presidentof student services, announced Laramie County CommunityCollege exceeded its yearly goal to United Way for 2010.United Way assists local families and individuals achievetheir potential through living healthy lives, receiving a goodeducation and having income stability.LCCC surpassed last year’s total of $10,338 by $1,600, making$11,938 this year.Seneca FlowersGive until it feels goodThe last day to register your child forthe Giving Tree is Dec. 6. Those whowish to give may pick up tags throughDec. 10.Laramie County Community College willmake a difference in the lives of low-incomechildren this year—by giving.The campus community can make a differenceby going to the Giving Tree, situated in theStudent Services Building lobby, and sponsoringa tag for a family/child’s holiday wish.Transitional Services Manager Allen Pricesaid that every year about a 100 tags for childrenare selected by students, organizations andemployees for sponsorship.The sponsorship provides these children oflow-income families with gifts for the holidays.A person can sponsor a child by obtaining atag by Friday, Dec. 10, from counseling and studentwellness in the Student Services Building,Room 121. The recommended donation is$30 or less. The gifts can be either wrapped orunwrapped.LCCC students and families can also sign upby Monday, Dec. 6, for their children to receivegifts. The families can specify the child’s needsand clothing sizes.Price added he felt LCCC as a whole wasa very giving college. He noted AssociatedStudent Government, Across All Lines and PhiTheta Kappa are working in various ways toensure this year’s Giving Tree will be a success.On Dec. 16, from 3:30–6 p.m., a Christmasparty in counseling and student wellness will beheld and gifts will be distributed.
