SHABBAT IN THE WHOLE TORAH / WORD1. It begins with Adam and EveWe have earlier spoken about the complete work of creation / redemptionmade by God “in the beginning”.We also saw that immediately after God had made man and placed man inthe Garden of Eden – man entered into the Shabbat.God declares that He will rest! Man together with God also rests becausethis day is holy / pure.Genesis 2:3 “ 3 And God blessed (spoke good of) the seventh day, set it apartas His own, and hallowed it, because on it God rested from all His work whichHe had created and done.At this stage man is working, by taking dominion – giving the animals names –but at this time he only works for some part of one day.We need to spell out some important principles from this passage:Shabbat / a Seventh Day which has been blessed by God and declared holy /pure is given to Adam – i.e. all of mankind – to the first of the human race.We need to fully grasp this issue of timing.Not only is it given to all mankind but it is given before Abraham and hisdescendants who would become known as Israelites / Jews had come intoexistence.Shabbat is therefore clearly not a Jewish thing. It’s a God ordainedCommandment.This fact is essentially confirmed in the New Testament when we get thestatement that the Shabbat was made for man.Mark 2:27 “The fact that the label put on this day “the Shabbat of the Lord” again gives usevidence that this day and our faithful obedience of keeping it does not haveany connection to a people / tribe / ministry.46
