Media Resource Guide - University of Namibia

Discovering and sharing knowledge is one of the University of Namibia’s toppriorities. The University has a wealth of expertise in a number of fields.But, for the purposes of this publication we decided to list experts on topicsthat media practitioners regularly seek comment and analysis on. Since thisis the first publication UNAM has produced of this type, the topics for whichwe have listed experts for where identified through informal chats withprint and broadcast media practitioners.Politics, Economics, Health, Law, Education,Regional trade issues, Labour, AirTransport Accidents, Crime, Environmentand Agriculture were the topics identifi ed.However, this is not the end of it. Theuniversity will continue updating this bookletannually, as the need for new topics andexperts arises. HUMAN & SOCIAL SCIENCESProf. Lazarus Hangula holds a doctorate degree in History, Philosophy andEthnology from Johannes Gutenberg Universityin Mainz, Germany. Previous to that he obtaineda Masters of Arts degree in Philosophy, Historyand African studies from the same university. Prof.Hangula also hold certificates in Natural ResourcesManagement from the University of Wisconsin-Madison (USA), and International Law from the TheHague Academy of Internal Law (The Netherlands)amongst others.Prof. Hangula is an accomplished academic who published and is quotedextensively; and moved through all the management echelons of anacademic institution (having served as HOD, Director of an academic,research and consultancy centre, Pro-Vice Chancellor and the Vice-Chancellor respectively). POLITICSProf. Andre du Pisani studied Political Science and History at the Universitiesof Stellenbosch, Cape Town and Cambridge, as wellas at the London School of Economics and PoliticalScience (LSE). Since 1998 he is professor of Politicsat the Department of Political and AdministrativeStudies at the University of Namibia. From 2001to 2003 he held the post of Dean of the Faculty ofEconomics and Management Science. Mr. Phanuel Kaapama studied Development, Administration, and Planningat the University of Bristol. In 2005 he was appointedacting head of the Political and AdministrativeStudies Department of the University of Namibia.In 1994 he was a founding member of the NationalYouth Council, which he chaired until 1997. LAWProf. Nico Horn completed an LL.D in Constitutional Law with the Universityof South Africa. Prof . Manfred Hinz studied Law, Philosophy, Anthropology, Sociology as wellas African and Oriental languages at the Universityof Mainz in Germany, where he also obtainedhis doctoral degree in Law. After Namibia gainedindependence, he helped with re-constructing thelegal system for the Ministry of Justice, as well asestablish the University of Namibia’s Faculty ofLaw. ECONOMICSDr. Omu Kakujaha-Matundu has a Ph.D in Resource Economics from theInstitute of Social Studies in the Netherlands. EDUCATIONMr. Zach Kazapua is Pro-Vice Chancellor: Administration and Finance. AGRICULTUREProf. Osmund Mwandemele is the Pro-Vice Chancellor: Academic Affairs &Research. He is the founding Dean of the Faculty ofAgriculture and Natural Resources and the foundingDirector of UNAM’s Sam Nujoma Marine andCoastal Resources Research Centre at Henties Bay.He completed his Bachelors of Science degree at theUniversity of Dar es Salaam in 1976, followed by aMasters Degree in 1978 from the same institution. Hethen enrolled for a Ph.D degree with the Universityof Sidney in Australia, which he completed in 1983.He has 30 years of teaching and research experienceat University level. Prof. Godwin Kaaya holds a Ph.D in Veterinary Pathology from theUniversity of Guelph, in Canada. He also has aMasters in Pathology and Microbiology from theUniversity of Nairobi. Dr. Luke Kanyomeka has a Ph.D in Weed Science from the University ofPretoria in South Africa. TAX/FINANCEProf. Jurie Hayes completed a Chattered Accountants Degree with theUniversity of Stellenbosch in Cape Town. HEALTHDr. Lischen Haoses-Gorases is a Senior Lecturer and Dean of the Facultyof Medical & Health Sciences. She has a Ph.D anda Masters degree in Nursing Science from theUniversity of Namibia. SCIENCEProf. Enos Kiremire is the Dean of the Faculty of Science. He has a Ph.Din Organic Chemistry from the University of NewBrunswick in Canada. He did his undergraduateand part of his postgraduate studies with MakerereUniversity in Uganda. He has done research on anumber of science related topics among them:Nitrosyl, Carbon monoxide, Dinitrogen and ChemicalEducation research.
