نشرة شهرية صادرة عن منظمة األقطار العربية املصدرة للبترولANNOUNCEMENTOAPEC AWARD FOR SCIENTIFIC RESEARCHFOR THE YEAR 2012Pursuant to its policy in encouraging scientific research by awarding two prizes on biennialbasis (First Prize is KD 7000 and 5000 for the Second Prize, equivalent to $ 25000 and $ 18000).The organization of Arab Petroleum Exporting Countries (OAPEC) is pleased to announce thatthe topic for its Scientific Research Award for the year 2012 is:TECHNICAL DEVELOPMENT OF EXPLORATION AND EXPLOITATION OFUNCONVENTIONAL NATURAL GAS RESOURCES IN ARAB COUNTRIESResearch Theme:Globally, Natural Gas was the fuel that experienced the most rapid increase in demand, where, thereis an urgent need for clean energy sources. Several major gas consuming and gas producing countries, including some Arab countries, seek to find new gas resources which could sustain world gas supplies, where there are huge unconventional gas resources such as shale layers, tight rocks and others. The aim of this research is to review the major techniques used worldwide that have succeeded indeveloping such resources and to examine the possibility of their application in Arab countries. The following main issues are suggested for the research, to which the author is encouraged to addother suitable aspects:1. The geological structure of unconventional gas reservoirs, the phases of explorationoperations, and production history, if any.2. A review of the techniques used to explore and develop unconventional gas fields, includingthe reasons for selecting those techniques. They might include well drilling and completionmethods, reservoir fracturing techniques, drilling fluids, measuring methods used to providedata on the characteristics of reservoir rocks, evaluation of reservoir structures, well loggingtechniques, and the use of simulation software to evaluate a reservoir’s production andprospects.3. The benefits and economic returns of applying such techniques.4. The impact of unconventional gas production on Arab and world gas markets.5. Conclusions and recommendations.Conditions for Submitting the Research1. The research may be submitted by one or more author(s). Institutions and organizationsare excluded.2. The research must be new, and has not been granted an award previously.3. The author(s) shall, in advance, agree to give OAPEC the right to print and publishthe research in case he/she/they win one of the prizes. A signed statement to this effect(sample appended). The author(s) maintains all other propriety rights including that ofpatent (if applicable). OAPEC shall exercise its right to publish the winning researchafter six months from the date of advising the winning author (s) with the decision of theAward Committee.42السنة - 37 العدد 12
