Organization of Arab Petroleum Exporting Countries<strong>OAPEC</strong> ActivitesSeminar on the Impactof Climate Change on theEnergy Sector in BahrainIn response to the invitation extendedby the UN Development Program, theGeneral Secretariat of <strong>OAPEC</strong> tookpart in the proceedings of the Seminaron the Impact of Climate Change onthe Energy Sector in the Kingdom ofBahrain, held on 15 November 2011in the Kingdom of Bahrain under theauspices of Bahrain’s National Oiland Gas Authority, the Electricity andWater Authority, the UN DevelopmentProgram, the UN EnvironmentProgram, and the General Commissionfor Protection of Marine Resources,the Environment and Wildlife in theKingdom of Bahrain. It was attended bya select group of specialists and partiesinterested in the issues of the environmentand climate change and its challengesand impact on the energy sector.The seminar was opened by Dr Abdul HussainBin Ali Mirza, Bahrain’s Minister of Energy, whowelcomed the attendees, noting the importance ofclimate change, which, he said, had become a tangiblereality and a most sensitive issue because of its majorimpact on all sectors, especially that of energy. This, headded, required environmental monitoring and controlsto meet the global requirements of facing the possibleeffects of climate change. Dr Mirza also pointed outthe vital role of fossil fuels, which would remain themain source of energy supplies until the middle of thetwenty first century, according to many studies.At the seminar four papers were presented bydifferent parties, including one by <strong>OAPEC</strong>’s GeneralSecretariat under the title ‘The United NationsFramework Convention on Climate Change.’ It dealtwith three main topics:Firstly, the Climate Change Convention.Secondly, facing up to the possible effectsof climate change (adaptation – mitigationprograms).Thirdly, the course of negotiations and majorinternational changes.<strong>OAPEC</strong>’s General Secretariat was representedat the seminar by Mr Abdul Karin Ayid, EconomicsExpert, Economics Department.Volume 37 Issue 1218
