The conditions are alsogreat for sailing.Stockyard Gully National ParkCockleshell Gully Road leads you to theStockyard Gully Reserve, 20 kilometresinland of Leeman. Accessible by fourwheel drive only, be sure to take yourtorch and explore the fascinating,ancient belowground river system of theStockyard Gully Caves or join a tour fromGreen Head or Cervantes. The cavesform part of the Old North Stock Route,once used by stockmen to drive theirstock from Walkaway in the north to NorthBeach in the south. As the caves form anatural ravine, livestock could be kept onovernight stops. Caution is required whenvisiting the caves, particularly after rain asthey are subject to fl ooding.Sea LionsAustralian sea lions are among the rarestof the world’s seal species. The waterssurrounding Leeman are renownedfor the signifi cant sea lion populations.It’s not unusual to spot one of thesecaptivating creatures lazing in the sunon the beach. Beagle Island, north ofLeeman, is a breeding colony and hometo the largest population of the AustralianSea Lion in Western Australia, estimatedat between 150-250 animals dependingon the breeding cycle.Little Three Springs ReserveLittle Three Springs Reserve is one ofthe last natural watering holes left on theOld North Stock Route with picturesquenatural springs set among the trees.Some of the date palms around thesprings were planted by cameleers whostopped in the area while taking theircamels through to the goldfi elds. Theoasis-like picnic area is a delight to visitand you may even be lucky enough tosee brumbies drinking at its banks.Access is by four wheel drive only.
