After 66 years of mystery, thewreck of German vessel, the Kormoran wasfound in March 2008 and a few days laterthe Sydney was found approximately 250kilometres from Shark Bay. The beautifullydesigned memorial features a silver domeof 645 seagulls to represent each sailorlost in this war time disaster. A wall displaysphotographs of the HMAS Sydney II and thenames of her crew. To the north, a bronzestatue of a woman gazes hopefully out tosea as she awaits news of her sailor at sea.Volunteer guides run tours daily at 10.30amfor a gold coin donation.Point Moore LighthouseThis bold, red and white striped landmarkhas become something of a Geraldtonicon. Overlooking waters at Point Moore,the lighthouse stands 34 metres tall and itsbeam can be seen 26 kilometres out to sea.The structure is the only one of its kind in<strong>Western</strong> <strong>Australia</strong>. Interpretive signage onthe lighthouse’s interesting history can befound at its base.St Francis Xavier CathedralBuilt in stages from 1914 to its opening in1938, the Byzantine style architecture ofthis cathedral is one of Monsignor Hawes’greatest masterpieces.
