Covering 183,004 hectares, thepark is located on the lower reaches of theMurchison River. Over the past 400 millionyears the river has cut magnifi cent red andwhite banded gorges for 80 kilometres,as it makes its way to the sea. Explorethe depths and heights of the river gorgesand sea cliffs and admire the fl oral beautyof the vast, rolling sandplains. Most roadsin the National Park are sealed, except forroads to The Loop and Z-Bend, howeverthese are still suitable for all two wheeldrive vehicles.River GorgesThe Murchison River Gorges in theKalbarri National Park have been carvedover millions of years to form dramaticsandstone cliff faces which plummetinto the Murchison River as it meanderstowards Kalbarri.Nature’s Window and The LoopLocated just 400 metres from theNature’s Window car park, this rockborder beautifully frames the ruggedupstream view. Nature’s Window marksthe beginning and end of The Loop, a sixhour(eight-kilometre) walk trail, providingdifferent views of the winding gorgebelow. The Loop is not marked, but theeasiest route starts at Nature’s Window,heading east along the cliff top to the fi rstriver bend, then down along the ledgesand fl ood plain at water level, returningto Nature’s Window, keeping the river toyour right at all times.Z-BendRoss Graham LookoutAn easy 500-metre walk from the carpark brings you to some of the mostbreathtaking scenery in the National Park.From the safety of the lookout, the gorgeplunges 150 metres to the river belowwhere majestic river redgums provide alush contrast to the earthy hews of theTumblagooda Sandstone.Ross Graham LookoutThis site provides the easiest place inthe park to access the river, with a shortwalk from the car park bringing you to thetranquility of the shaded river’s edge. Thisprovides an ideal location to take a dip inthe river or walk along its banks.Hawk’s HeadEnjoy the views from the picnic area orwander down the wheelchair accessiblepath to the lookout above the river.River Gorge HikesFor those with greater levels of fi tness andexperience, there are many gorge hikingoptions available ranging from one dayexcursions to four or fi ve day extendedhikes. Further information about thesehikes is available from the Department ofEnvironment and Conservation offi ce andit is a strict requirement that all overnightgroups register with park staff beforemaking the trip. Drinking water is notavailable in the National Park, so alwayscarry your own supply. Hiking through thepark is particularly spectacular betweenAugust and October when the park burstsinto colour during wildfl ower season.
Coastal GorgesKalbarri’s coastal gorges featuremagnifi cent, towering cliffs that plummetto the waves below. From Red Bluff,named by Willem de Vlamingh in 1697,the spectacular coastal cliffs extend 13kilometres to the National Park’s southernboundary. Numerous signposted walkingtrails allow you to explore the ruggedlybeautiful coastline and look for migratingwhales between June and November.Please take care and stay clear ofcliff edges and overhangs. Pathways,lookouts and balustrades have beenprovided for your safety.Red BluffThe rustic earthly hues of Red Bluff heraldthe start of the coastal gorges and the areais well known for its scenery, snorkelling,fi shing and swimming spots. Red Bluffboasts a picturesque white sandy beach,contrasted against the rust red cliffs. Thecliffs are particularly spectacular in thelight of the setting sun.Pot AlleyThe view south from the carpark trulycaptures the splendour and beauty of thisremarkable coastline, particularly scenicas the sun sets over the Indian Ocean.Amble down the stepped path to thesecluded beach below.Blue HolesJust south of the townsite is the snorkellingparadise of Blue Holes. Dozens of rockpools and swimming holes offer protectedsnorkelling and an array of marine life toview.Eagle GorgeNature’s WindowEnjoy the panorama from the crest orwander down into the tranquil depthsof the gorge, where you will discover adelightful beach. Watch as eagles soar inthe updrafts searching for hapless preybelow.Wittecarra CreekSouth of the Kalbarri township isWittecarra Creek - thought to be the site ofthe marooning of Dutch sailors punishedfor their part in the Batavia mutiny atthe Abrolhos Islands in 1629. WittecarraCreek is today a popular fi shing spot.Island Rock & Natural BridgeAs the coastline slowly yields to the forceof the Indian Ocean, the fracturing anddecaying of the cliffs has sculpted theseprecarious rock formations. Stunningviews can be enjoyed from the safety ofthe lookout enclosures provided, a shortwalk from the car park. A wheelchairaccessible picnic shelter and toilets arenow available.Mushroom Rock Nature TrailSee how nature has shaped this dramaticcoastal landscape along the threekilometre Mushroom Rock Walk Trail.Marvel at the varied geological formationsand witness kangaroos feeding (bestseen at dawn and dusk) amid thebeautiful coastal heath. Allow betweenone and two hours to stroll the markedcircuit that connects Rainbow Valley andMushroom Rock.
