In 1996, he was made Technical Manager responsible for managing Exxon'sengineering and technical activities associated with development projects in Russia andAzerbaijan's deepwater Caspian Sea. In 1999, he was appointed as Vice President, AfricaDeepwater, ExxonMobil Development Company responsible for deepwater oil and gasfield development <strong>of</strong>fshore Africa, most notably in Angola and Nigeria.Y. In 1955, he was appointed Minister <strong>of</strong> Posts andTelecommunications and in the following year, he took over theTransport Portfolio. He was a member <strong>of</strong> the delegation <strong>of</strong> the ruling Alliance Party (nowthe Barisan Nasional) which together with the representatives <strong>of</strong> their Royal Highnesses,the Rulers <strong>of</strong> the Malay States, successfully concluded the Constitution for theindependence <strong>of</strong> the Federation <strong>of</strong> Malaya with the British Government in April 1957. OnIndependence Day, Y. A. Bhg. Tun Omar was made concurrently Minister <strong>of</strong> Labour andSocial Welfare. He was re-elected to Parliament in 1959 and was named Minister <strong>of</strong> Healthand Social Welfare. In June 1962, he was appointed Ambassador to the U.S.A. andconcurrently Permanent Representative to the United Nations. In 1966, he was madeMalaysia's first High Commissioner to Canada and in the following year, Malaysia's firstAmbassador to Brazil. He was made Minister without Portfolio from 1963 to 1972 andappointed President <strong>of</strong> the Senate in 1973. He retired from public services in 1980 andconcentrated on his business and social welfare activities. Y. A. Bhg. He started his career as a lecturer in University <strong>of</strong> Malaya in 1969. Hejoined University Pertanian Malaysia (now known as Universiti Putra Malaysia) in 1975and was made Pr<strong>of</strong>essor <strong>of</strong> Animal Nutrition in 1981. He was appointed the Deputy ViceChancellor in 1983 and became the Vice Chancellor <strong>of</strong> University Putra Malaysia in 1994,responsible for transforming the University to become one <strong>of</strong> the leading centres <strong>of</strong>higher education. As an accomplished academician, he has helped found many academicsocieties and associations, and has published over 350 papers in journals and proceedingsin the fields <strong>of</strong> animal science, university management and education. For hismeritorious career and services, he has received numerous awards, decorations andhonours nationally as well as internationally. He retired from University Putra in April2001. Y. Bhg. Tan Sri Syed is now Director and Chairman <strong>of</strong> several private limitedcompanies and President <strong>of</strong> several societies in Malaysia.ESSO MALAYSIA BERHAD10
