This linkageis most apparent in Finland in connectionwith the strong mining influence, in Italyand Spain where the profession is regulatedby law, and in the UK where degree coursesare accredited by the professional body(Geological Society of London).Accreditation systemsMost countries offer some form of accreditationof their degree programmes. Thelevel of accreditation varies from internallywithin the university, to review by thegovernment education ministry to nationalquality agencies. In addition, the accreditationis provided by the relevant professionalinstitution in Italy and UK.The distributionof use of the various accreditationproviders is shown in Figure 10.Figure 9a. Numbers of freshmen and graduates (full scale)Euro-AgesConclusionUsing the information obtained in the 27summaries of national reports on the Bolognaprocess, higher education in geology, professional pre-requisites and accreditation, the following conclusions can bereached:- In most European counties the establishmentof education in accordance withthe Bologna process is well advanced- Most geology degree courses haveswitched to the three cycle style ofcourses and the first students are nowundergoing this training- The cycles of education being deliveredare in accord with the Bologna threelevels, namely Bachelor (normally 3years), Masters (1 – 2 years) and Ph.D.(3 years). The data collected in thisstudy show that the duration of eachcycle varies between different countries- The required number of ECTS creditsfor a Bachelor degree in Geology variesbetween 180 and 240, and the numberof ECTS credits at Masters level variesbetween 120 and 180- The number of universities offeringFigure 9b. Numbers of freshmen and graduates (expanded scale)geology degree courses varies widelyfrom country to country. The numberof places available is usually higher thanthe intake of students each year- The number of graduates per year ismarkedly lower than the number offreshmen- Accreditation of course materials is carriedout by a variety of agencies includinginternally in the university, externalquality agencies, the relevant governmentministry and national professionalbodies.Figure 10.
