solved only by a ‘New Deal’ in highereducation in Serbia, there are some problemswhich are typical for geological education.Geology has a long tradition inhigher education in Serbia dating back to1880. Ever since that time the structureof geological education underwent manychanges. The last one occurred in the mid-60s when the decision makers decided toattach natural science-oriented geologicaldepartments to the Faculty of Mining andGeology. From that moment onwards, these departments never felt at home atthe UB-FMG which became a single institutionin Serbia for teaching and researchin all branches of geology. What is strangein having natural science and applied geologicaldisciplines (along with mining)together? Nothing, except that they aretogether in the single geological school inthe country! So that, if the predominatingengineers of the UB-FMG decide to closesome apparently unattractive departmentswhich continuously lack students and havelow potential of attracting extra funds - andthat, indeed, from a pure (and blind) managementpoint of view might be a rationalidea - this would practically signify the endof the given geological discipline in Serbia. One can decide to shut down the chair inpetrology or palaeontology at the Universityof Salzburg (in order to prioritize somethingelse) because there are other AustrianUniversities with good petrologists orpalaeontologists. However, if it is done inBelgrade then these disciplines will die outin Serbia completely. The fact that geologicaldepartments are not only providing thestudy programmes but they are also a sortof oasis of particular scientific disciplines isalmost unique. This situation induces manydifficulties in the UB-FMG organizationincluding those in successfully applying theBologna Agreement. These are circumstances under whichEarth scientists are being taught in Serbia. In spite of the mentioned difficulties, weare continuously improving our educationprocess and trying to bring Earth scienceto everyone. Our best students havelong been recognized as of good qualityand to have no problems obtaining Ph.D.or post-Doc positions worldwide - fromUBC in Vancouver to Macquarie Universityin Sydney. Now we want our averagestudents to be better because they willbe among the very significant players inbuilding a sustainable society in Serbia.ReferenceMusselin, C. 2005.
