How academia and industry createProfessional GeologistsUniversity of Miskolc, HungaryEuro-AgesThe University of Miskolc is the onlyplace in Hungary where Earth Sciencefor engineers is taught at BSc, MScand PhD levels. Industrial relations arevery important for the university, thestudents and industry. During recentdecades several types of cooperationhave been developed. Among these, the compulsory company contributionsfor the Professional EducationFund is perhaps the most important. This contribution sets the financialbackground for practical training, studentinternships and scholarships aswell as acquisition of equipment andprovision of laboratories. The universitiesbecame entitled to this grant from2003 onwards. The predecessor of the University ofMiskolc, the Bergschule in Schemnitz(now Banska Stiavnica, Slovakia)is one of the oldest mining schools inEurope. Since its foundation in 1735, weare now completing the 265 th academicyear. The early focus on mining and metallurgicalengineering has been widely diversifiedtoday; the teaching now extends toeight faculties and one institute of music. The Faculty of Earth Science Engineeringpreserves the mining traditions and dealswith both the traditional and pioneeringbranches of Earth Sciences and technologies, from mining through petroleum engineeringto environmental engineering andgeoinformatics. To date, there are morethan 1,000 students and 60 teaching staff in1Professor, Head of Department2Vice-dean, Faculty of Earth ScienceEngineeringthe faculty. Since the industrial companiesare our main customers, special attentionhas always been paid to the industrial relationsof the Faculty.Earth Science Engineering curriculaThe Bologna system was introduced in2006. Before that date, 5-year coursesoffered a Diploma from the differentbranches of Earth Science Engineering, with the possibility of continuing with 3years of PhD studies.Since that time Earth Science and Engineeringsubjects have been taught at B.Sc.,M.Sc. and Ph.D. levels. Three curriculaare offered at a B.Sc. level (Earth ScienceEngineering, Environmental Engineering,Geography). The Earth Science and EngineeringB.Sc. covers all main areas of theextractive industry with minor specializationsin: exploration geology and geophysics, mining and geotechnical engineering, process engineering, as well as oil and gasproduction and upstream activities. ThisB.Sc. programme in Hungary is offereduniquely in the University of Miskolc.Several engineering M.Sc. coursesare linked to these basic courses, such asHydrogeology, Petroleum and Gas Engineering,Applied Earth Sciences (Geologyand Geophysics) and Process Engineering. The Faculty is affiliated to internationalM.Sc. programmes, such as the Federationof European Mining Programmes (in consortiumwith TU Wroclaw, TU Freiberg,U of Exeter, TU Delft, TU Aachen andTU Helsinki). At the Ph.D. level severalstudents graduate each year, from Geology,Geophysics, Mining Engineering,Petroleum Engineering, Hydrogeologyand Environmental Engineering.Training of geologists and geophysicistsIn these training schemes geologists andgeophysicists graduate as Earth ScienceEngineers, with Geology, Geophysics,European Geologist 3023
