database and information available onthe net to improve personal knowledge.Table 4 shows the structure of the Bachelorcourse in Geological Sciences at MilanoBicocca University. The outcome of an Italian Masters programmein Geology is:- knowledge and understanding: at a highscientific level in Earth Sciences, withskills in the original application ofresearch methods- Applying knowledge and understanding:solving geological problems in severaland multidisciplinary fields applyingspecial techniques in various new situations- Making judgements: solving complexsituations with incomplete dataset(hazard management, active processesstudy, geological evaluations incivil engineering). Special skills in theanalysis of consequences from personaljudgements and evaluations made- Communication skills: with communicationof results and personal evaluationswith national or foreign specialists andcitizens in Italian and other Europeanlanguage (especially English).- Learning skills: using advanced publications, database and information availableon the net improving personalknowledge in the resolution of geologicaland technical problems.Number of freshman students and graduatesThe evolution of the number of students ingeology in the Italian Universities is shownin Figure 1.Prior to the introduction of the Bolognaprogramme in Italy the number of graduatesin geology each year was 1240; in2007, after 5 years of the application, Italianuniversities graduated 632 Bachelorsand 277 Masters. One quarter of Bachelorgraduates did not continue to the MastersHE programmes. The total number of garduatesat both levels is only 73% of thetotal before Bologna; also the number offreshman compared to graduates shows amarked decrease. The explanation of theseresults is not to be found in the changesintroduced by the Bologna Process; HEprogrammes in geology have not the sameappeal as others (e.g., EnvinronmentalEngineering). Only 51% of Masters graduatesin geology has a job after three years(27% for Bachelors).COURSEFIRST YEARECTSCalculus 12Physics 12Informatics for Earth Science 4General and Inorganic Chemistry 8Principles of Geology 8Physical Geography 8Introduction to geological mapping 2Total: 67Mineralogy 8Field activities 2European language 3Table 4a.
