WHEN HE “DID NOT” SPEAKON POLITICSDr. Kamil RajparMr. <strong>Bhutto</strong> had a mind of his own <strong>and</strong> nothing daunted him from speaking thetruth against the government.In 1969 during Martial Law when politicians were banned from entering thepremises of educational institutions throughout the Pakistan at that time I beingthe general secretary of Liaqat Medical College Student Union Jamshorosucceeded in getting a decision by the Union as well as General Body <strong>and</strong> theAcademic Council of the college for inviting Mr. Z. A. <strong>Bhutto</strong> to be the ChiefGuest on Latif Day. The news item appeared in the press that <strong>Bhutto</strong> will be thechief guest in Liaqat Medical College Jamshoro. This news item alerted MartialLaw authorities <strong>and</strong> every pressure was put on Mr. <strong>Bhutto</strong> by the Martial Lawauthorities not to visit LMC. Jamshoro, but Mr. <strong>Bhutto</strong> told the authorities “Solong as the invitation st<strong>and</strong>s. I will go <strong>and</strong> attend the function”. Afterwards, theMartial Law authorities turned their guns on me <strong>and</strong> the Administrator/Principal of the College late Brig. S. H. A. Gardezi <strong>and</strong> pressed for withdrawingthe invitation. But we also refused to withdraw the invitation. Accordingly, on13th August. 1969 Mr. <strong>Bhutto</strong> reached Jamshoro campus <strong>and</strong> thous<strong>and</strong>s ofstudents of LMC as well as entire H y derabad colleges welcomed him. Mr. <strong>Bhutto</strong>was asked by the Martial Law authorities not to speak on politics but that heshould confine his speech on Shah Abdul Latif. Mr. <strong>Bhutto</strong> had his own style ofstarting a speech <strong>and</strong> he informed the gathering that I have been told not to speakon politics but he added “I am a political animal; politics is in my blood, how theycan stop me from talking on politics. Had Shah Abdul Latif been alive today hewould have definitely opposed One Unit <strong>and</strong> he too would have been put behindthe bars (jail) by the Martial Law authorities”.This is how he started his speech. He knew how to phrase things <strong>and</strong> his sense ofhumor often had a cheerful effect on his manner of speech. Nothing daunted Mr.<strong>Bhutto</strong> <strong>and</strong> he continued his hard- hitting speech against the government besidestalking on philosophy of Shah Abdul Latif Bhitai. It was a historic function. Thiswas the only political function held in an educational institution throughoutPakistan during the ban period.<strong>Bhutto</strong> took major decisions bold <strong>and</strong> never surrendered before extremists <strong>and</strong>nationalists. During language riots in 1972, Mr. <strong>Bhutto</strong> was bold enough to take<strong>Zulfikar</strong> <strong>Ali</strong> <strong>Bhutto</strong>, <strong>Recollections</strong> <strong>and</strong> Remembrances; Copyright © www.bhutto.org 145
