MY LEADER.Muhammad Hanif KhanIt was a great tragedy and misfortune of the people of Pakistan that just afterindependence in 1947 the father of the Nation Quaid-i-Azam Muhammad AliMimi) passed away. His right hand man Quaid-i-Millat Liaquat Ali Khan wasalso soon after that assassinated and as a result thereof the ship of nation was leftwithout a captain and completely rudderless on the mercy of gigantic waves inan ocean of violent storm. Several opportunists jumped in the arena to grabpower by hook or by crook amongst whom the foul played by GhulamMohammed was the worst who by his authoritarian and undemocratic steps, marred the political horizon of the country to the extreme extent and landed thecountry’s political institutions in a state of utter confusion, chaos and disorder. Then there was a chain of unparliamentarily, incautious and shameful events thatdisgraced the newly born country both nationally and internationally. A flood ofconspiracies ensued which resulted ultimately in the promulgation of MartialLaw in 1958, with General Mohammed Ayub as Chief Martial Law Administrator.General Mohammed Ayub Khan included a young charming intelligent-lookingbarrister-at-law from Sindh, the Babul Islam, in his first cabinet of federalministers. That person is known in today’s world by the name of Zulfikar AliBhutto Shaheed whose thoughts and philosophy has attained the name of“Bhuttoism”.Who knew at that time that this graceful young man shall one day become abeloved leader of the people of Pakistan and shall touch the heights of glory oninternational scene? Who knew that he shall give voice to the muted people ofPakistan? Who knew that he shall become a symbol of courage, wisdom and shallbecome voice of the poor, oppressed, down-trodden, shelterless, ignored massesof Pakistan, the Muslim Ummah and the Third World? He had all the qualities ofa Mir-i-Karwan (Leader) as Allama lqbal has visualized in his famous verse:Zulfikar Ali Bhutto, Recollections and Remembrances; Copyright © www.bhutto.org 81
