McLeod County Chronicle, March 20, 2013 HORIZON Page 11Although new homes are rare, localproperty owners still pulling permitsBy Rich GlennieEditorIf new single-home construction isany indication of the housing marketand its recovery from the “Great Recession,”tough times are not over in theGlencoe area.In 2012, two building permits werepulled for new single-family homes andnone were pulled for townhouses or twinhomes, according to building permit statisticsfrom the city of Glencoe.The valuation of the two new homeswas $433,581.Since 2008, only 13 new homes havebeen built in Glencoe. A decade earlier thecity averaged 25 to 30 new housing startseach year.Thankfully, the health of the local economyis not gauged on single-family housingstarts alone.Total building permit valuation totalednearly $6 million; down from $10 millionin 2008, but well above the $1.8 millionin 2011.Rather than building new homes, homeowners,businesses and public entities arepouring money into remodeling existinghomes and buildings.Here are some other statistics gleanedfrom the 2012 building permit report bythe city:Residential permits• House additions, five permits valuedat $182,725.• House remodels/basement finishing,23 permits for $331,976.• Garages, three permits for $70,544.• Garage additions/remodels, one permitfor $38,607.• Three-season porch/sunroom, one permitfor $8,000.• Decks, 13 permits for $87,827.• Demolition permits, one for $6,000.• Sheds/accessory structures, one permitfor $3,000.• Maintenance permits issued by OTC,152 for $6,281.• Miscellaneous permits, six for$20,908.The city also issued 23 plumbing permits,32 mechanical permits, one housemoving permit and six permits for fencesthat had no valuation attached.The total valuation of the 270 residentialpermits was $1,189,449.A second category in the report wascommercial and industrial permits.
