APPENDIX AThe StudyThe data for <strong>Science</strong> <strong>vs</strong>. Religion comes from the Religion among AcademicScientists study (RAAS), a broad study of <strong>religion</strong>, spirituality, and ethics amonguniversity <strong>scientists</strong> at twenty-one elite research universities in the UnitedStates, conducted over a four-year period between 2005 and 2008. Scientistsincluded in the study were randomly selected from seven natural and socialscience disciplines at universities that appear on the University of Florida’sannual report of the “Top American Research Universities.” 1 The University ofFlorida ranked elite institutions according to nine different criteria, includingtotal research funding, federal research funding, endowment assets, annual giving,number of national academy members, faculty awards, doctorates granted,postdoctoral appointees, and median SAT scores for undergraduates.
