CERTIFICATE IN SUSTAINABLEFORESTRY (Part Time)The programme of study aims at providing trainingand skills on the science and applications ofsustainable management and utilization of ourforests, with a view to ensuring environmental andeconomic sustainability of this increasingly importantsector.ObjectivesGlobal environmental and economic changes areleading to a shift in the role of forests within the economy, at local, regional andglobal levels. Apart from the essential role they play in providing important ecosystemservices, forests represent a key component of mitigation and adaptation measuresfor climate change impacts.The objective of the programme is to provide training to in-service staff of theForestry Services, school-leavers as well as other environmentally consciouspersons wishing to develop their knowledge and skills in the various aspects ofSustainable Forestry. The programme will provide a broad overview of the keycomponents comprising this approach to forest science, forest management, forestutilization, and sustainable development for Mauritius.After completing this programme, students should have acquired knowledge and skills to:Ꮉ Contribute to the improvement anddevelopment of forest managementsystems in the country;Ꮉ Contribute to the revitalizationof forestry activities for improvedsocioeconomic benefits to the people ofMauritius;Ꮉ Help in the analysis, planning,implementing, monitoring andevaluation of forestry operations andforestry-related activities;Ꮉ Demonstrate a broad understandingof climate change and the role of forestsin mitigation and adaptation forclimate change;Teaching methods used will includeformal lectures, tutorials, laboratorypracticals, case studies, seminars andfield visits.Ꮉ Contribute to sustainablemanagement and utilization of forestresources in Mauritius;1111
