23provide protection against detector overheating in case <strong>of</strong> external clock failures and t<strong>of</strong>urnish the sensor with the UFPA status signals [10].The <strong>focal</strong> <strong>plane</strong> <strong>array</strong> consists <strong>of</strong> 320 x 240 <strong>microbolometer</strong> unit cells, which isformatted for 50% full TV resolution. A unit cell consists <strong>of</strong> a micro-bridge and readoutelectronics, which includes detector selection switch transistors, as shown in Figure 2.8.The microbridge structure is fabricated on top <strong>of</strong> the readout electronics. The firstgeneration <strong>of</strong> <strong>microbolometer</strong>s, made by Honeywell, used a bipolar transistor for detectorselection switch in the readout circuits. The second generation <strong>microbolometer</strong> readoutcircuit, the U3000' s made by Rockwell, uses MOSFET for their selection switch.
