The project was designed to reachorphans and vulnerable young people in one of theworld’s most AIDS-impacted areas where the rate ofHIV is over 40 percent. The Microfinance for YouthProgram (MFY) first provides high school studentswith marketing, business planning, accounting andAIDS prevention training. Next, students evaluateeach other’s business plans and are taught accountingand business legal procedures. Students canthen take out individual loans of $75 to launch theirbusiness ventures. While the MFY program primarilyaims to help youth actively participate in the economy,keeping youth engaged in school and avoidingbehaviors that spread HIV are also emphasized.Global Model UNhttp://www.un.org/gmun/The Model UN program has typically been implementedat a national level, with conferences inmore than 70 countries happening every year. TheUnited Nations Department of Public Informationdecided to take the Model UN program to the nextlevel with the first annual Global Model UN conferenceheld in Geneva, Switzerland, in August 2009.Between 600-1000 university-level students wereinvited to participate in the conference via a competitiveselection process. The Global Model UNconference more closely resembles UN Assembliesin its rules and procedures than a typical Model UN,and participants have access to UN officials beforeand during the conference. GYAN boasts memberorganizations from over 190 countries. In 2001,GYAN merged its database with www.TakingITGlobal.org, thereby forming what is generally consideredto be the most comprehensive database of youthorganizations and events. GYAN collaborates with avariety of agencies to implement several programs,such as the Global Youth Service Day, Youth andthe Millennium Development Goals, and Youthin Global Governance. GYAN publishes a monthlye-newsletter that provides the latest information inyouth news, events, and professional opportunities(e.g., jobs, training).Global Youth Coalition on HIV/AIDShttp://www.youthaidscoalition.org/index.htmlThe Global Youth Coalition on HIV/AIDS (GYCA) isa youth-led alliance working to combat HIV/AIDSin over 150 countries. The organization is made upover 3,000 young leaders aged 15 to 30. Membersrepresent a wide variety of organizations, programsand networks focusing on youth with HIV/AIDS. Free online e-courses in Project Management,Political Advocacy and Grant Proposal Writing andFundraising are also available to 20 selected applicants.Courses run four to five weeks, and studentscomplete the course with a final project plan, grantproposal or advocacy campaign that they can putinto practice. GYCA also publishes a bi-monthlynewsletter online called Youth Awake!
