After Umar, an imam, retired from twenty-fiveyears of service as a Muslim chaplain for the New York State prisonsystem in 2002, he continued to minister to New York State inmates on avoluntary basis. As the U.S. geared up for the Iraq War in 2003, however,Umar spoke out against U.S. policies in Afghanistan and Iraq. Comingfrom a man who is both black and Muslim, such statements apparentlywere unacceptable during the build-up to the war. Umar was attacked in along front-page article in the Wall Street Journal, which claimed hesupported the 9/11 terrorists. He eventually filed suit against the newspaperfor slander. Other newspapers, like the New York Times and the New YorkPost, jumped on the bandwagon. None could find a single quote in whichUmar expressed support for the 9/11 terrorists, but no newspaper devotedspace to allow Umar to rebut their claims. New York Governor GeorgePataki and Senator Charles Schumer blasted him, alleging that he wasspreading terror throughout the prisons. Schumer even demanded that allMuslim chaplains in the New York State prisons be fired. Umar was barredfrom working in the prisons, and all of his sources of related income driedup.In December 2005, Umar was in a Bronx apartment building that heowned when a prospective tenant became belligerent and punchedhim.
