NATIONAL SUMMIT 2011
5 th Young Engineers National Summit 2011
The Institution of Engineers, (Kuching, Sarawak branch) was the host for the 5 th Young Engineers National Summit 2011.
The summit was held from 25 March to 27 March 2011 at Kuching, Sarawak. Leaders and Engineers from all branches were
gathered in Kuching, Sarawak to share and update the activities in the respective branches. The National Summit was
organized in conjunction with the Engineering Week 2011.
Engr. Tang Wai Keong, IEM YES Penang Branch Chairman attended the summit. The summit conducted training for
trainers for all participants, to create a more systematic and effective approach in IEM membership in respective branches.
In conjunction with the Engineering Week 2011, representatives from each IEM YES branch presented their engineers’
stories to students from secondary schools and UNIMAS undergraduates. This summit also provided a good platform for the
Engineers to share their stories and knowledge in engineering life. The summit can gather the leadership fraternity of the
young engineers.
Delegates were taken on a technical visit to the latest centralized wastewater management system project in Kuching which
is also called a true gravity sewer system. The wastewater treatment plant is sized to 100,000 PE module capacity. The
effluent discharged from the wastewater treatment plant complies with Standard A requirements of the Environmental
Quality Act and helps to improve the water quality of the Sarawak River.
Delegates were taken to the new Sarawak State Legislative Assembly Building (DUN Complex) which is located at the
North bank of the Sarawak River. It is the Central meeting place for the Sarawak State assemblymen to meet and preside
over debates and passing of laws. The total contract cost was valued at RM296.5 Million and it was completed on 31 May
2009. The distinctive umbrella roof of the new DUN complex is an iconic landmark for Sarawak.
ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING 2011
The Institution of Engineers, Malaysia (Penang Branch) 44 th Annual General Meeting (AGM) was held on 4th
November 2011 at 7.00pm at the Penang Branch Secretariat. A total of 120 members attended this meeting. A buffet
dinner was served at the Penang Club. 4 CPD points were approved for this event.

IEM (Penang Branch) Annual Dinner 2011
The tradition of IEM (Penang Branch) continues this year with the successful 44 th Annual Dinner organized
by its organizing Chairman, Ir. Lim Kok Khong with invaluable help from its G&S section. The dinner was
held in Traders Hotel on 24 th November 2011. To have something different, fine dining with western cuisine
was served this time instead of the 8 course Chinese cuisine.
This event was graced by The Chief Minister of Penang. YAB Tuan Lim Guan Eng. Department heads from
various government agencies were also invited along with all SPEAD component members to celebrate this
special event. More than 500 participants including some of our IEM (Penang Branch) Past Chairmen,
fellow engineers and invited guests attended the dinner.
Very encouraging support from the sponsors (organisations within the construction sector) have no doubt
contributed tremendously to the success of IEM (Penang Branch) 44 th Annual Dinner.

‘NORTHERN BUILDERS’ BOOK
The Northern Builders Book that captured the memoirs of past chairmen (from year 1967 to 2008) was launched on 26 th
March 2011 by Invest Penang Chairman, YB Dato Lee Kah Choon and The Institution of Engineers, Malaysia President,
Dato Prof. Ir. Chua Hean Teik at the Penang Club. This book is currently on sale at RM50.00

CAFEO 29 & YAFEO IN BRUNEI DARUSSALAM
The 29 th CAFEO (Conference on ASEAN Federal of Engineering Organizations) was hosted by PUJA (Pertubuhan Ukur
Jurutera & Arkitek) held from 27 th November to 30 th December 2011 at Rizqun International Hotel, Brunei Darussalam.
The engineers from ASEAN and beyond were gathered in Brunei for CAFEO 29 to address the theme of “Sustainable
Urbanization: Engineering Challenges & Opportunities”.
In conjunction with this conference, IEM Penang Branch has sent one delegate to attend the conference of Young
Engineers of AFEO (YAFEO). Engr Choong Chin Hooi represented IEM Penang Branch for the involvement in the
YAFEO meeting. Ir. Lim Kok Khong and Ir. Dr. Goh Teik Cheong from Penang Branch also attended this CAFEO 2011
where Ir. Lim Kok Khong was conferred a title of Honorary Fellow AFEO. This meeting was also attended by delegates
from the IEM main branch as well as delegates from ASEAN countries.
CAFEO 29 in Brunei Darussalam was well organized by PUJA. It gave all the ASEAN delegates an unforgettable
memory for the few days while in Brunei. This conference has provided an ideal platform for engineers teaming up to
learn and exchange the finer engineering points towards a better quality of life.
The 30 th CAFEO in year 2012 will be held in Cambodia. This would be another great network opportunity for engineers
working together for a better future.

Total seven (7) Executive Council Meetings were held to discuss and plan for the activities in
engineering campus, USM.
4. Activities
For the first IEM (SS) USM 2010/2011 session, the IEM-USM Student Section had been
actively organising various activities that suit all engineering students. Site visits and career talks
were also organised to provide opportunities for students to obtain industrial awareness,
industrial experience and industrial exposure.

Annual General Meeting
The 1 st AGM of IEM (SS) USM was held at the Lecture Hall 7, Engineering
Campus, Universiti Sains Malaysia. It was attended by Engr Lim Kok Kong,
advisors of IEM (SS) USM, and 234 members. After the AGM, the members
adjourned for refreshments.

Structural Design And Buildings Competition
USM School of Civil Engineering and IEM (SS) USM in conjunction with
the cooperation of third year and fourth year Civil Engineering
undergraduates successfully organized Structural Design and Buildings
Competition on 22.09.2010 at main hall of USM Engineering Campus.
Industrial Visit To Swing Bridge, Prai
The technical visit to Gamuda for Civil Engineering was attended by 37
students.
Mechanical School Career Talk, Design and Manufacture Your Future
The mechanical school career talk was attended by 30 participants which
was held at DK 5. The speaker was Prof Mani Maran from Mechanical
School, Ir. Choon from IEM, and Simon Tan from Toastmaster.
IEM Electronic Engineering Technical Division (eETD) Talk
eETD Talk was attended by about 124 students. Guest of honour, Ir. Paul
Phor Chi Wei delivered a speech to student members of the IEM-USM
Student Section.
Talk on Sustainability and Competency for Civil Engineer
44 participants attended this talk which was held at DK7. It was presented by
speaker Ir. Ng Sin Chie, Hon. Chairman of IEM Penang Branch, Ir. Paul
Phor Chi Wei, Hon. Secretary of IEM Penang Branch and Manager of THE
CAD SPECIALIST AND AUTODESK training center who gave a talk
about the engineering software, AutoCAD.
Industrial Visit to Penang Port
This visit was for 2 nd year electrical students. IEM (SS) USM received
sponsorship along with moral support from School of Electrical and
Electronic Engineering. 26 students participated in the visit to Penang Port.
Talk On Financial Investment And Personal Financing For Fresh
Graduate
139 participants and 17 committee members attended the talk. The speaker
was Mr Ezwan Hamdi from Securities Industry Development Corporation
(SIDC).
Industrial Visit to Micro Modular System
The visit was for 2 nd year Mechatronic students. 25 students had joined the
visit.

Industrial Visit to Micro Modular System
This visit to MMS in Penang was the second technical visit organized by
Electrical and Electronic Engineering school for 1 st year Mechatronic
students and attended by 21 members.
Industrial Visit to Spansion
A total of 33 1 st year electronic engineering students visited Spansion.
Industrial Visit to Intel
The visit was organised for 2 nd year electronics students. A total of 36
students participated.
Industrial Visit to Spirit Aerosystems Malaysia and MAS Engineering
AEROSOC in conjunction with the cooperation of first year and second year
Aerospace Engineering undergraduates have successfully organized
industrial visits to two companies which were Spirit Aerosystems and MAS
Engineering on respective dates mentioned at Subang. 35 students and one
lecturer went for the visit.

43 rd Annual General Meeting
The 43 rd AGM of IEM Penang Branch was held at the IEM Penang Secretariat on
26.11.2010. The AGM was attended by 95 members, followed by a buffet lunch at Penang
Club.
Seminar on Building Information Modeling for Performance
The above seminar was jointly organized with Precision Design Solution (M) English, at
E&O Hotel and attended by 15 participants. The speakers were Mr. Ho Chow Jin & Mr.
Naveen Bhat.
Seminar on Building Information Modeling for Structure & Civil
12 participants attended the above seminar at E&O Hotel. The speakers were Mr. Ho Chow
Jin & Mr. Naveen Bhat.
43 rd Annual Dinner
43 rd Annual Dinner of IEM (PG) was successfully held at Gurney Hotel, Penang and
attended by a crowd of about 500.
Seminar on Design Using MES Infra Application
2 speakers from MES Innovation Sdn Bhd, Mr. Bryan Ewe Teik-Tsia & Ms. Lee Lai Haa
conducted the above seminar for 43 participants at IEM Secretariat.
Technical Talk on Project Risk Management Process: The PMI Techniques
32 participants attended this talk which was held at IEM Secretariat. It was presented by
speaker, Ir. Dr. Mui Kai Yin.
Technical Visit to Penang Hill Cable Car
55 members attended this technical visit. After a successful tour of the facility, members
were treated to lunch by the management.
2 Day Course on Essential Project Management
The above course was jointly organized with IEM HQ Project Management Technical
Division, at IEM Penang Secretariat and attended by 29 participants. The speaker was Ir.
Lee Boon Chong.
Seminar on Steel Applications
Bluescope Steel Lysaght co-organised the above with IEM Penang at IEM Penang
Secretariat with a good turnout of 54 participants. The speaker was Mr. Santan
Pathmanandavel.
Engineering Week 2011
IEM Annual Event, Engineering Week 2011 which was held from 19 th – 26 th March 2011 is
recognized as a continuous effort to enhance the image of the engineering profession
amongst the community by organizing various activities as listed below:
Friendly Badminton Games
Engineering Week ended on a friendly note with players from PAM, PBA, JKR, TNB,
Bomba, MPPP, PTG and IEM engaged in friendly badminton matches played at Red
Crescent. PAM won as Champion for this year.
Technical Talk to Underground Utility Detection and Mapping
The above talk was held at IEM Penang Secretariat with a good turnout of 60 participants.
The speaker was Ir. Peter Chin.

Engineering Career Talk
30 students attended the above talk held at USM, Nibong Tebal. The speakers were Ms Kay
Sock Phoh & Ms Khoo Su Ching from Job Street.
Engineering Career Camp 2011
IEM Penang Branch organized a 1-day Engineering Career Camp at IEM Penang Secretariat
for Form 6 students from SMJK Chung Hwa Confucian, SMK Sungai Ara, SMJK Heng Ee,
SMK (L) Methodist, SMK Raja Tun Uda, SMJK Chung Ling, SMJK Perempuan China
Pulau Pinang & SMK Free School. The career talk was presented by Ir. Paul Phor Chi Wei.
It was followed by visits to M.E.I Project Engineers Sdn Bhd, Jabatan Kerja Raya Negeri
Pulau Pinang and Knowles Electronics (M) Sdn Bhd. A total of 8 counselors and 24
students took part.
Technical Talk on Arbitration
Ir. Dr. Wong Fook Keong was the speaker for the above talk on “Arbitration” which was
held at IEM Penang Secretariat. It was attended by 63 participants.
Professional Interview Workshop
42 participants attended this informative Professional Interview Workshop which was held
at IEM Penang Secretariat. The Expert Panel Speakers include Ir. Mohd Aman Hj Idris, Ir.
Dr Goh Teik Cheong, Ir. Ooi Boon Bow and Ir. Thong Cheong Tai.
Professional Interviewer Workshop
17 participants attended this workshop and the speaker was Ir. Mohd Aman Hj Idris.
Book Launching for Book “Northern Builders”
100 participants attended book launching at Penang Club. YB Dato’ Lee Kah Choon was
guest of Honour who launched the book and IEM National President Ir. Prof. Dato Dr
Chuah Hean Teik was present to share the memorable and meaningful occasion.
2011 Distinguished Engineer Legacy Lecture
Our fellow eminent Penang engineer, Dato’ Ir. Tan Chong Meng presented his life-long
experience on “Events and Memorable Incidents In An Engineer’s Life” during his Legacy
Lecture held at the Penang Club in conjunction with the Engineering Week. Aim of this

Suruhanjaya Perkhidmatan Air Negara (SPAN) & Indah Water Konsortium Sdn Bhd jointly

engineers submitting sewerage development proposals to the authority for approval. A total
of 43 members attended the dialogue held at IEM Penang Secretariat.
