Who does this policy apply to?2.1 This policy applies to all Academy staff and students and visitors to the Academy.3. Who is responsible for carrying out this policy?Reference DCSF 0803/2001 Health and Safety: Responsibilities and Powers3.1 Responsibilities of individuals within the academy are as follows: Board of governors. The ultimate responsibility for all aspects of health and safety at work withinCorby Business Academy rests with the board of governors through safety organisation. Principal. The principal is responsible for the affective implementation of the safety policy and forencouraging staff, through regular monitoring, to implement health and safety arrangements. Safety adviser. The safety adviser is adviser to the principal on health, safety and welfare withinCorby Business Academy. He or she is also to advise all personnel in meeting their individualresponsibilities with regard to health and safety at work. Line manager. All heads of faculty or area are responsible for ensuring that day-to-dayrequirements regarding health and safety at work are met within their areas of concern. Whereany new process or operation or substance is introduced into the area of their responsibility, theyare to liaise with the safety adviser so that associated risks are assessed and any precautionsdeemed necessary are implemented. Teachers and supervisors. The responsibility of applying safety procedures on a day-to-day basisrests with all teachers and supervisors. All accidents will be investigated by them in accordancewith current procedures in order that the cause of any accident can be identified and remedialaction taken as appropriate. They are to ensure that all new members of staff and pupils undertheir control are instructed in their own individual responsibility with regard to the Health andSafety at Work Act 1974 and that they frequently make inspections of their area(s) ofresponsibility, taking prompt remedial action where necessary. Employees and pupils. Employees and pupils have a responsibility to ensure that they act with allreasonable care with regard to the health and safety of themselves, other members of theacademy, contractors and members of the public. They are required to co-operate withsupervisors, line managers, safety representatives and the safety adviser, and to adhere to safetyguidance given in helping to maintain standards of health and safety within the academy. Safety representatives. It is the responsibility of safety representatives to make such proposals asthey see fit with regards to methods of achieving improvements in health and safety aspects intheir area(s) of responsibility. Heads of faculty are to nominate safety representatives to representtheir area(s) of responsibility. Contractors. It is the responsibility of contractors and their employees to read and comply withthe academy health and safety policy. Safety committee. The safety committee as a whole, or through individual members, is to monitorhealth and safety performance and recommend any action necessary should this performanceappear or prove to be unsatisfactory.
