KvR report 001/2006<str<strong>on</strong>g>Deltas</str<strong>on</strong>g> <strong>on</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>move</strong>One <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> objectives <strong>of</strong> phase 1 was to come up <strong>with</strong> a list <strong>of</strong> <strong>deltas</strong> that might beinteresting for <strong>the</strong> next phase. Taking <strong>the</strong> 4 highest-ranking <strong>deltas</strong> for all individualindicators menti<strong>on</strong>ed in secti<strong>on</strong> 6.4 gives a list <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> following list <strong>of</strong> 20 <strong>deltas</strong>:Chao Phraya Godavari Mek<strong>on</strong>g ParanaDanube Krishna Mississippi PoFly Lena Niger Shatt el ArabFraser MacKenzie Nile Yangtze-KiangGanges-Brahmaputra Mahakam Orinoco Yuk<strong>on</strong>The <strong>deltas</strong> that score three or more times <strong>with</strong> <strong>the</strong> best 4 are Lena (4), Ganges-Brahmaputra (3) and MacKenzie (3). For fur<strong>the</strong>r interpretati<strong>on</strong>, a subset can becreated from <strong>the</strong>se 20 <strong>deltas</strong> by applying several criteria. That is, however, also amore c<strong>on</strong>text-dependent (subjective) approach. The deltaic complex <strong>of</strong> Rhine, Meuse and Scheldt has a particular positi<strong>on</strong>. It wasnot included in <strong>the</strong> present study, since it did not feature in <strong>the</strong> data bases used.Since system-based measures are equally applicable <strong>on</strong> delta-similar coastlines, thiscomplex <strong>of</strong> river mouths will be included in <strong>the</strong> subsequent phase <strong>of</strong> this project.Because system-based measures have been applied here, we presume that <strong>the</strong>area is potentially promising.Subsequent stepsThis study includes an inventory <strong>of</strong> <strong>deltas</strong> that will be c<strong>on</strong>fr<strong>on</strong>ted <strong>with</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>effects</strong> <strong>of</strong><strong>climate</strong> change in <strong>the</strong> future. This was looked at <strong>on</strong> a global scale and <strong>on</strong> <strong>the</strong> basis <strong>of</strong>existing knowledge. The next step c<strong>on</strong>sists <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> selecti<strong>on</strong> <strong>of</strong> a number <strong>of</strong> <strong>deltas</strong>(<strong>with</strong> <strong>the</strong> aid <strong>of</strong> DELTAS) <strong>with</strong> good potential for system-based measures. We will<strong>the</strong>n look more closely at <strong>the</strong>se <strong>deltas</strong>, or even just at parts <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>deltas</strong>. Thefollowing aspects will feature in <strong>the</strong> next phase:- <strong>the</strong> fur<strong>the</strong>r study <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> ecological, morphological, ec<strong>on</strong>omical and socialfuncti<strong>on</strong>s <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>se <strong>deltas</strong>;- <strong>the</strong> collecti<strong>on</strong> <strong>of</strong> supplementary informati<strong>on</strong>;- <strong>the</strong> mapping <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>effects</strong> <strong>of</strong> future <strong>climate</strong> changes <strong>on</strong> <strong>the</strong>se <strong>deltas</strong>;- <strong>the</strong> mapping <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> way in which system-based measures can be used toanticipate <strong>climate</strong> change;- <strong>the</strong> mapping <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> opportunities that arise <strong>with</strong> regard to social and ec<strong>on</strong>omicaspects.After using <strong>the</strong> system, phase 2 should comprise c<strong>on</strong>tacting local experts and keyinformants for subsequent steps to be taken as well as searching local partners andinstituti<strong>on</strong>s cooperating <strong>with</strong> <strong>the</strong> development and realizati<strong>on</strong> <strong>of</strong> system-basedmeasures in <strong>the</strong> selected <strong>deltas</strong>.ReferencesAllen PA, 1997.
