1. IntroductionThe annual conference <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Cedefop TTnet network held in Thessaloniki in 2001, set upthree projects on <strong>the</strong>mes identified as transversal priorities <strong>for</strong> TTnet national networks whichalso reflected Community policy on training <strong>teachers</strong> and trainers in <strong>VET</strong>. The three projectsare:• Project 1: E-Learning: innovative practices and <strong>the</strong> activities and competences <strong>of</strong> <strong>teachers</strong>and trainers;• Project 2: <strong>Pr<strong>of</strong>essionalisation</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>VET</strong> <strong>teachers</strong>;• Project 3: Validation <strong>of</strong> non-<strong>for</strong>mal learning <strong>for</strong> trainers.This report describes Project 2: <strong>Pr<strong>of</strong>essionalisation</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>VET</strong> <strong>teachers</strong> <strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>future</strong> (<strong>PROFF</strong>).The main focus <strong>of</strong> <strong>PROFF</strong> is on innovative in-service training <strong>for</strong> <strong>VET</strong> <strong>teachers</strong>. The projectwas jointly coordinated by TTnet Denmark and TTnet Finland. The Dutch, French, Italian,Norwegian and Portuguese TTnets were partners.<strong>PROFF</strong> is based on previous work within TTnet and builds on findings and results presentedat a TTnet workshop on <strong>the</strong> ‘pr<strong>of</strong>essionalisation <strong>of</strong> <strong>VET</strong> <strong>teachers</strong>’, held in Helsinki in 2001.The main <strong>the</strong>mes <strong>of</strong> this workshop were:• ‘pr<strong>of</strong>essionalisation <strong>of</strong> <strong>teachers</strong>’;• meeting <strong>future</strong> challenges in this field;• developing ‘pr<strong>of</strong>essionalisation’ during teacher careers.On <strong>the</strong> second <strong>the</strong>me <strong>the</strong> workshop identified several challenges. These included:• <strong>the</strong> need to provide vocational education to new target groups;• changing paradigms in educational <strong>the</strong>ory and <strong>the</strong> trend towards student centredapproaches;• <strong>the</strong> increasing role <strong>of</strong> IT, as an educational and management tool;• new developments in labour markets;• changes in national <strong>VET</strong> legislation;• organisational changes at school level;• <strong>the</strong> impact <strong>of</strong> internationalisation.11
