Grace <strong>Concrete</strong> ProductsDaratard ® <strong>17</strong><strong>Retarder</strong> <strong>for</strong> <strong>Economical</strong> <strong>Concrete</strong><strong>Production</strong> <strong>with</strong> <strong>Set</strong> Time ControlDescriptionDaratard ® <strong>17</strong> admixture is a ready-to-useaqueous solution of hydroxylated organiccompounds. Ingredients are factory premixedin exact proportions to minimise handling,eliminate mistakes and guesswork.Daratard <strong>17</strong> contains no calcium chloride. Onelitre weighs approximately 1.24 kg ± 0.02 kg.ApplicationsDaratard <strong>17</strong> retards the initial and final set ofconcrete. At the usual addition rate of 200 mL/ 100 kg cementitious material it will extendthe initial setting time of portland cementconcrete by 2 to 3 hours at 21°C.Daratard <strong>17</strong> is used wherever a delay insetting time is desired to insure sufficientdelivery, placement, vibration or compactiontime, such as in:temperature are not major considerations,Grace Construction Products’ water-reducingadmixture such as WRDA ® <strong>with</strong> HYCOL ®should be used.Compatibility <strong>with</strong> OtherAdmixturesDaratard <strong>17</strong> is compatible in concrete <strong>with</strong> allcommercial air-entraining admixtures, suchas Daravair ® or Darex ® AEA ® . Due to theslight air-entraining properties of Daratard<strong>17</strong> itself, the addition rate of Daravair maybe reduced by about 25%. By combiningthe separate effects of air entrainment anddispersion, the water requirement of concretemay be reduced up to 15%. Each admixtureshould be added separately.•••Hot Weather ConcretingTransit Mix <strong>Concrete</strong>Prestressed <strong>Concrete</strong>Daratard <strong>17</strong> is also used in specialapplications, as in bridge decks where itextends plastic characteristics of the concreteuntil progressive deflection resulting fromincreasing loads is completed.Water-reducing PropertiesAlong <strong>with</strong> set retardation, Daratard <strong>17</strong>provides water-reduction (typically 7 to 10%)in a concrete mix. This water-reducing actionof Daratard <strong>17</strong> produces greater plasticityand workability in the fresh concrete and thestrength and permeability of the hardenedconcrete are measurably improved. Daratard<strong>17</strong> is designed <strong>for</strong> use on jobs where hightemperatures make extended setting timesdesirable. It is recommended only when theprimary purpose is to delay and control thesetting time of concrete. When time andAddition RatesAddition rates <strong>for</strong> Daratard <strong>17</strong> will typicallyrange from 100 to 400 mL / 100 kg ofcementitious material. The amount to be usedwill depend upon the degree of retardationrequired under job conditions. Longer settingtimes or higher temperatures will requirehigher addition rates. Conversely, the additionrate will be lower <strong>for</strong> shorter extensions oftime.Dispensing EquipmentA complete line of admixture dispensers isavailable. Accurate and easy to maintain,the dispensers are easily adapted to new orexisting batching plants.
