Joseph Smith taught that Latter-day Saints were actually descendants <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>Twelve Tribes <strong>of</strong> <strong>Israel</strong> – specifically <strong>the</strong> tribe <strong>of</strong> Ephraim, <strong>and</strong> as such shared “<strong>Israel</strong>iteancestry with <strong>the</strong> Jews.” 8 This shared ancestry led to a spirit <strong>of</strong> bro<strong>the</strong>rliness, at leastfrom <strong>the</strong> Mormon perspective, <strong>and</strong> a sense <strong>of</strong> common purpose in <strong>the</strong> restorationprophesied anciently to come about in <strong>the</strong> latter days. According to Smith,We [<strong>the</strong> house <strong>of</strong> <strong>Israel</strong>] are <strong>the</strong> favored people that God has made choice<strong>of</strong> to bring about <strong>the</strong> Latter-day glory; it is left for us to participate in <strong>and</strong>help to roll forward <strong>the</strong> Latter-day glory, “<strong>the</strong> dispensation <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> fulness<strong>of</strong> times, when God will ga<strong>the</strong>r toge<strong>the</strong>r all things that are in heaven, <strong>and</strong>all things that are upon <strong>the</strong> earth,” “even in one,” when <strong>the</strong> Saints <strong>of</strong> Godwill be ga<strong>the</strong>red in one from every nation, <strong>and</strong> kindred, <strong>and</strong> people, <strong>and</strong>tongue, when <strong>the</strong> Jews will be ga<strong>the</strong>red toge<strong>the</strong>r into one. 9Along with a sense <strong>of</strong> common ancestry <strong>and</strong> camaraderie, Smith taught that <strong>the</strong>ga<strong>the</strong>ring spoken <strong>of</strong> in <strong>the</strong> Bible was already underway, <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> Latter-day Saints had amost important role in that ga<strong>the</strong>ring. The ga<strong>the</strong>ring would consist <strong>of</strong> two branches: <strong>the</strong>ancient kingdom <strong>of</strong> Judah, <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> “lost” tribes <strong>of</strong> <strong>Israel</strong>. 10Judah would be ga<strong>the</strong>red toJerusalem, <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r tribes, led by Ephraim (Latter-day Saints), would ga<strong>the</strong>r to Zion, located in America. “The city <strong>of</strong> Zion spoken <strong>of</strong> by David,” he claimed, “will be builtupon <strong>the</strong> l<strong>and</strong> <strong>of</strong> America. . . But Judah shall obtain deliverance at Jerusalem.” 11 Thega<strong>the</strong>ring was to consist not only <strong>of</strong> Latter-day Saints' ga<strong>the</strong>ring in <strong>the</strong> elect from among<strong>the</strong> “lost tribes” (i.e., conversion to <strong>the</strong> Mormon faith), but also a literal ga<strong>the</strong>ring <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>Jews to Jerusalem, <strong>and</strong> a redemption <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> l<strong>and</strong>. Within this notion was <strong>the</strong>underst<strong>and</strong>ing that Jews were not, <strong>the</strong>refore, cut <strong>of</strong>f from <strong>the</strong> ancient covenant.
