Turkey Promoted At Cannes Film FestivalTurkey was promoted with wide-scaleactivities at the 60th Cannes Film Festival,which was held from May 16th to27th. Turkish Culture & Tourism Ministryheld a reception where jury members,moviemakers, artists and press membersattended at the Turkish pavilionon May 22nd. Beside the Turkey standand its activities, Turkish director FatihAkin and his movie as well as Nobel LaureateOrhan Pamuk as a jury memberhelped Turkey’s promotion in Cannes.Moreover, Fatih Akin’s “The Edge ofHeaven” received its first cinematic honor on Saturday by TheEcumenical Jury Award, a small but prestigious Cannes prize becauseof its power in bringing home a tragedy about two familiesbridging the East-West divide. On Sunday, Fatih Akin this timereceived a more prestigious award at the last night. Fatih Akinreceived t he award for Best Screenplay for The Edge of Heaven,a story of loss and forgiveness. At the same night, Romanianentry “4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days” walked away with thePalme d’Or for best film out of 22 in the main competition. TheGrand Prix runner-up prize went to the acclaimed “The MourningForest”, a lyrical Japanese movie about mourning and grief directedby Naomi Kawase.Best director was Julian Schnabel for “TheDiving Bell and the Butterfly”, based on the true story of Frenchjournalist Jean-Dominique Bauby who suffered a stroke and wasparalysed yet managed to write a book using one eyelid to communicate.Best actor was Konstantin Lavronenko from RussianAndrei Zvyagintsev’s “The Banishment”. Best actress was JeonDo-yeon for South Korean competition entry “Secret Sunshine”.Swedish Committee Visited Izmir for“Sustainable Tourism”The Swedish Committee, arrived Izmir inthe scope of the ‘Sustainable Tourism’project, visited Izmir Metropolitan MunicipalityMayor Aziz Kocaoglu. EuropeanUnion Coordinator Jon Martissongave information about the sustainabletourism project developed by the municipalitiesunion of the two countries andsaid that the project would contribute alot in Turkey’s EU membership process.Martisson spoke of the characteristics and the tourism potentialof the city of Kalmar , Sweden . Swedish politician Lina Lingtell,Kalmar University Tourism Programs Lecturer Anneli Andersson,Kalmar Town Council Member and City Planning CommitteeMember Genita Abaza also participated in the visit. The committeealso visited non-governmental organizations, universitiesand historical sites in the city. Kocaoglu, emphasizing the tourismpotential of Izmir , expressed his satisfaction about the visit of theSwedish guests and added: “I hope, by the help of this project,that the number of Swedish tourists visiting our country will increase.”The committee members gave Kocaoglu presents unique totheir countries, while Mayor Kocaoglu’s gifted them with a booknamed Izmir Postcards which includes hundred-year-old photos ofthe city.
