HE NEW AUDI A4, IN SEDAN AND AVANT WAGON CONFIGURATIONS, CAN
trace its lineage back to 1972, and it carries on the tradition of evolution in engineering
and technology that has earned it many happy owners, and awards like
the 2009 AJAC Luxury Car (over $50,000) of the Year.
The new A4 is not a major departure in styling from previous A4s, but it is under its
skin that much has changed. A new chassis architecture sees the engine moved some 16
cm rearward, which enhances the handling balance and overall performance of the car.
The A4 is wider and longer than before, yielding significant gains in interior space,
especially in the back seat area. All A4s have luxury touches like sunroof, automatic
climate control and leather seating surfaces. A full suite of safety equipment is standard,
including six airbags and Electronic Stability Program. Navigation, Technology and Sport
packages lead the way in available options.
As before, the A4 will be available with 2.0-litre turbo four or 3.2-litre V6, both with
FSI direct injection and Audi Valvelift system for more power and efficiency. The 2.0T
has the option of six-speed manual or Tiptronic automatic, driving through the famous
quattro all-wheel drive system, or a CVT transmission and front-wheel drive. The V6 has
Tiptronic and quattro only.
With the new generation A4 comes new technology, including LED daytime running
lights which are uniquely styled, Drive Select which allows customization of steering, suspension,
throttle and transmission performance, and Side Assist blind spot warning system.
The new Audi A4 is at the forefront of design and engineering in the luxury sport
sedan arena.
‡ Gerry Frechette is a full-time automotive journalist based in Vancouver. His
some 17 years ago, he took this life-long love of cars and applied it to a career writing
about them. At that time, he joined the Automobile Journalists Association of Canada,
where he remains a member today.
