DEFINITION<br />
PROPHECY<br />
The special ability to receive divinely inspired insight regarding persons, <strong>the</strong> church, and or world<br />
situations and communicate it with <strong>the</strong> <strong>Spirit</strong>’s power to his people through a divinely anointed utterance<br />
as encouragement, consolation, direction edification, prediction, or console.<br />
CHARACTERISTICS<br />
1. Not afraid to speak out publicly or take a strong stand.<br />
2. Tend to see needs <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> group as a whole, and are willing to take scriptural stands on what must<br />
be done.<br />
3. When speaking publicly people are convicted by <strong>the</strong> truth given.<br />
4. Convincing when <strong>the</strong> person presents an answer.<br />
5. Usually has a forceful personality.<br />
6. Great emphasis on right and wrong.<br />
7. Courage to openly reprove evil.<br />
8. Special emphasis on prophecy being more desirable than all o<strong>the</strong>r gifts. I Cor. 12:31, 14:1<br />
9. Three primary purposes:<br />
a) To edify-to build up, to streng<strong>the</strong>n, to make more effective<br />
b) To exhort-to stimulate, to encourage to admonish<br />
c) To comfort-to cheer up.<br />
10. Forth-teller as well as fore-teller<br />
11. Future directed, a person <strong>of</strong> vision and hope.<br />
12. May come as specific words, or general ideas.<br />
