20 3 The COBRA experiment<br />
There<strong>for</strong>e, a suitable scintilla<strong>to</strong>r material has <strong>to</strong> be fo<strong>und</strong>. For this<br />
thesis it is necessary <strong>to</strong> get an overview of the available scintillation<br />
detec<strong>to</strong>rs, the commercial prices and their properties, making them<br />
more or less suitable <strong>for</strong> this experiment. This is discussed in chapter<br />
4—“Scintillation detec<strong>to</strong>rs”.<br />
The steps of developing the <strong>design</strong> <strong>for</strong> the <strong>upgrade</strong> are described in<br />
chapter 5—“Scintilla<strong>to</strong>r <strong>upgrade</strong>”. Further on, the gain of the planned<br />
<strong>upgrade</strong> was determined with Monte Carlo studies of the 2νββ decay<br />
of 116 Cd in<strong>to</strong> the first excited state.
