Mr. Pranab Mukherjee, Minister of ExternalAffairs, India in July 2007.3.2 Development Cooperation3.2.1 Development AssistanceThe amount of development assistance that has been flowing per annum in theform of aids from both China and India has been so far negligible.Since the two countries established diplomatic relations in 1970, China hasoffered Ethiopia various economic assistance is estimated at 1 billion RMB,among which RMB 590 million are interest-free loans and more than RMB 343million are grants. With the support of the above-mentioned assistance, a totalof 14 complete sets of projects, such as Sino-Ethiopian Friendship road , a largescalevocational training institute equipped with advanced teaching facilitiesand the Gottera Bridge, have been finished, and 4 complete sets of projects areunder way including and Agricultural Demonstration Center. In 2001 and 2007,Chinese government wrote off Ethiopia 2 debts to the total amount of 364million RMB.China has been supporting Ethiopia in various fields, from 1974 to 2002, Chinasent a total of 12 batches of medical team to Ethiopia (suspended during theperiod of 1980 - 1985) with each batch consisting of 15 medical personnel. In2000, the ministries of agriculture and education of the two countries reachedagreements for developing vocational education and training. Since June 2001,China has sent batches of teachers for vocational education to be employed byEthiopia for the short-or-long-term training of its backbone teachers andstudents. Now there are 49 Chinese teachers specialized in rural vocationaleducation and 23 Chinese teachers for urban vocational education teaching in26
